I would like to know how many out there make their own filament?

If so, what extruder do you use?  Filabot, Kickstarter backed one, or built from the plans? Other?

Do you plan on making your own filament in the future?

If you do make your own, what raw materials do you use, and where do you get it from?  Are the raw materials too hard to find to delve into DIY Filament?
What kind of raw materials are you looking for?  ABS Pellets, PLA Pellets, Colorant Pellets, Recycled?
Looking for a multicolor Pellet Kit to start?

Also, if you made your own extruder, either from plans on the internet or bought a kit how did that go for you?

What kind of experiences do you have with using homemade filament when using the Replicator, or other 3D Printer?

Crowdsourcing Pellets, Interested?

I'm watching this space eagerly. I would like the ability to make experimental small batches, both for color variation as well as other mechanical and electrical property variation.

The Lyman extruder, v2, on Thingiverse looks pretty promising.

I make my own. It's based on the Lyman. You can see it on thingiverse. I've made some additional mods to the ones I already posted. I just haven't had time to update thingiverse.

I've been saving/categorizing my wasted prints for almost a year now, eager for the day that damn filabot goes live (i lack access to proper tools to even attempt to implement my own).

I do sort of fear that the quality of the recycled filament will be vastly inferior to the store bought variety. Has anyone tried recycled filament (ie, made from old prints, or other non-pellet sources) from their home made recyclers?

I haven't tried recycling any prints. When you compare the cost of pellets, it's not worth recycling. The pellets are crazy cheap. Recycling is great, but in this case, there isn't a strong economic insensitive. Recycling to reduce the world's trash - absolutely! ...but I let the county do that.

So where and how much do you get your pellets?

I got mine from Ashland Distribution (now Nexeo):  http://www.nexeosolutions.com/  They were able to get me 55lb. resin samples.  Price depends on the specific resin - the SABIC ABS resins I bought are really pricey in small quantities, but I was able to get the samples at the 550 lb. pricing (roughly $5.50/lb.).  I also got some much cheaper resin from them (their own generic brand of high-impact polystyrene), which was only a bit over $2/lb., I think (but it couldn't be extruded consistently, so that one was a total loss).

Me too! I've been saving my failed prints for a future filament extruder, too! Missed the kickstarter, but i've been regularly eyeing that filabot website.

Have you been buying coloured pellets or doing your own dyeing, or just going natural?

I've been collecting the parts for a lyman clone and hope to put it together over the xmas break and the possibility of different colours is intriguing.
I happen to have a bunch of printer ink (I know it would be cheaper to drain a pint of blood from the kids, but they complain) I was going to try.
The Lyman doesn't have a place to add that dye though so some experimentation was going to be required.
