How to print just a raft

Hey guys, here's a question that probably doesn't come up much.... How
do I print up just a raft? I tried to make a model that was just a
border of the size I needed and raft that but the raft becomes a
doughnut rather than a nice mat. I've tried to cleanly pry rafts off
of big prints but they are just too sticky to pull off in one nice
piece. Any thoughts? My dream would be some line of g code that just
says "make raft 100/40mm".

Thanks,
Bob

I use a raft with no part to calibrate my platform leveling, and generally, I can tell the machine to print a large really flat part, then just stop the print before the part itself starts to print (i.e., printing a 75X75 flat square, but stopping the print before the part itself prints)

I'd make a model of a .05mm tall empty box as big as the raft you want. The layer of the "model" should be pretty insignificant on your raft

Setting the "infill solidity" to zero under "fill" will just print out a hollow object.  So all that needs to be taken out are the walls.  So whatever that settting is should be just set to zero. I'm guessing it's the "solid surface layer" setting that is also under "fill".  I've only printed out hollow objects.  I've never totally eliminated an object.  However, I do know that this is the typical approach on eliminating a feature in RepG.  You just zero it out.  For example, if you go raftless, you still select to activate raft but you just zero out any raft layers.

Do you have ant particular aversion to editing the code? I believe
skeinforge puts a comment at the end of the raft. Just delete most of
the stuff from there to the end of the file.

Yes.  If your regularly printing out rafts then regularly manuelly editing out can lead to mistakes in editing.  Then that leads to having to figuring out what was not supposed to be edited out.  So it would be much more convenient to create a permanent profile(call it "raft only")  and just pick the profile and generate.

How many different raft-only prints do you need? Once you prepare the
gcode, save it and use it again next time you want to print just a
raft.

I'm not the one who needs any.  Whoever brought up the question in the first place just wants rafts or maybe just one raft.  He/she never got specific.  If you wanted multiple shaped rafts or varies multiple layer rafts then yes you need to set up multiple profiles.  What if you lose the gcode file and forgot the original settings?

Hey guys, sorry was afk for a while there. I'm trying to make a
translucent screen.. I had a raft section that looked really cool with
led lights behind it and was going to go with it. I'm trying the make
a box and stop before it prints idea now (thanks). Once I get he size
just right I'll delete out the actual build from the gcode so I can
just have a raft build. (I didnt know I could do that, thanks!) anyway
it's going well, thanks for the tips.

If your goal is to make a raft-like transparent screen...

Why not just design an object that looks like a raft and then slice it
to print raftlessly?

Plus, this will give you a little more control over the final product
other than just size of raft...

Also you might want to consider just making a box with a very shallow
bottom for this. 1-2 layers of natural ABS transmit light fairly
well. Depends on the effect you want though, of course.

Someone said here to just delete the code after the "end of raft" comment line in the gcode.
Another way is to create a profile with infill solidity set to zero and wall layer thickness to zero.
