I'm trying to convert a 3D molecular surface of some DNA into a printable format. I'm using Ubuntu. The only available format I have is .wrl, which Blender doesn't seem to be able to open. If I succeed, well, it will be another cool object in the thingiverse, which you could print as well.

I'm thinking of trying to print out 3D solvent accessible surfaces of various biological macromolecules for instructional purposes, just as soon as I get this printer working.

Give meshlab a try. I'm pretty sure it handles the vrml (.wrl) format.

meshlab is giving errors, but I also think this current model isn't good, its filled in mesh edges as cylinders rather than keeping it as simple triangles. Maybe if I go back to the molecular coordinates I can render something more directly ? We shall see.

update : apparently meshlab can outright open .pdb files and convert
them to surfaces, so this may be the solution.
