We still have hopes for putting together an extruder of our own
design. Towards that goal, we just got one of Rick & Karen's MakerGear
13.6:1 geared stepper motors.

You know how the DC motor used by MakerBot seems cheesy? This is the
opposite. It feels strong and precise.

I love the heft and solid feel of this thing in my hand.

We have not used it yet. We did put it on our Y axis and step it
around a bit. It just sounds and feels like a super solid solution.

So I thought I would share some photos. All these can be clicked on
for super high resolution:

Did I mention MakerGear has great customer service and that are
awesome to work with?

You think you're smiling now? Just wait until you get it dialed in and
happy..

Speaking of geared steppers, has anyone had any luck finding them online? I haven't found anyone who'd sell me just 1 at a reasonable price.
(I'm still waiting for Rick to get some in stock).

Cheers,
-Joel

Oh wow! I fail at google/sesarch and the internets. I tried searching before, but for some reason didn't end up finding a link to order.
Been seeing something listed listed locally (Australia) for over AU$130.

Cheers,

Huh, maybe they only sell to businesses. I tried to register and
didn't get a chance to put in any kind of login information and didn't
get a confirmation email.

check out these guys:

http://www.anaheimautomation.com/products/stepper/stepper-motors.php?tID=75&pt=t&cID=19

they have geared steppers as well. I have one of their big nema 17s (big I mean 100 oz-in)

If you want to go the other direction, they have a geared nema 11 with 2116 oz-in of torque.

Hey Aaron,

Are you using that motor for an extruder? By itself or with with printed gears?
If a non geared 100oz is sufficient by itself, I might actually go that route instead of getting a geared one.

Cheers,
-Joel

I'm planning on using it by itself, yes, it works with a Mk5 but you need to shim out the gear, it has a 5mm shaft and the drive gear has a 6mm bore. That and it get's pretty hot.
