Note that Windows 7 may format it and say it is "FAT" rather than "FAT16". They're
the same thing to Windows 7. What you definitely do not want is FAT32 nor FAT12.
So, if it is formatting it and just saying "FAT" then you should be okay.

I was having problems with my desktop machine not allowing me to read/write from my SD card.  I was almost convinced that the card reader was bad -- but then I realized that maybe it was a problem with the system configuration, since the hardware was relatively new.

It ultimately turned out to be that it was not mounting/assigning drive letter to the card.  I poked around to get it to work, but IIRC, one of the first things I had to do was to run the Administrator Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management and then select the volume and then Change Drive Letter and Path.

(A quick google turned up this page that tells you how to run that Change Drive Letter step: http://www.ehow.com/how_6385614_change-letter-multimedia-card-reader.html)

Make sure you assign a drive letter that does not conflict with any other devices you might use.

As long as SD cards are on the menu.
I can write to one and can use it with the external box just fine, but if I use the PC to tell it to print, I get a "write array" error and  nothing happens.

I had a similar issue with flakey I/o on the SD standard while my normal sdhc for my digital camera worked fine. it was the same behavior in the onboard SD reader and an external usb reader. MBI even replaced the card and when the second one was just as flakey I figured it was a system issue. Fixed it by uninstalling all of the usb host controllers and restarting Windows so they could reinstall. I had to show hidden devices in device manager to get them all. After the restart everything seems to work. I will repost if it changes.
