When slicing objects with the latest version of MakerBot Desktop (v3.5) I'm getting gaps in the outer shells of my prints. This doesn't happen when slicing for the Replicator 2, only for the Mini, 5th Gen, and Z18.

Any thoughts on a solution?

Wow!  I've been using the new version of Desktop with my Gen5 and have not seen any problems with my prints!  I very rarely look at the build screen.  So have you printed to know if what you see is what you get?

you need to print to see if the gap is there or not. they might have just changed the visualizer so that the first segment isn't drawn(maybe the first segment has less extrusion and doesn't go over visualizer threshold or something similar.

"It may look like there are gaps in layers, but this is intentional for the prevention of stringing in your prints."

It's a feature, not a bug (from Jodie's response on Feb. 17th): http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2015/02/06/makerbot-software-desktop-3-5-firmware-1-6/#comment-493078

Reinventing coast/wipe?

Yep, it appears to be that way. It's a real pain though. When printing anything with thin walls it leaves giant (relatively speaking) holes in the part, ruining part integrity. Thicker objects are no problem, as they have a "complete" shell behind the incomplete shell.

I'd much prefer they make the retraction more aggressive than completely eliminate that much of the toolpath.

Wow, that's crazy aggressive coasting.

well it's a fix for retractions causing jams.. ducttape over the original problem.

Yeah, who needs retraction when you can just coast until the nozzle is dry :-P
