I have an older Makerbot Rep 2x, Serial nr. R1004030.  We purchased it in 2013 and it has seen many upgrades and hours of use.  I was doing an upgrade to a Bondtech Block with Bondtech Feeding system.  For some reason after doing the update and I do a pre-heat, my temperature goes past the set temperature on the Left Heater.  The temperature is being read, the nozzle is being heated, the fan kicks on, the temperature keeps climbing past the set pre-heat temperature until it errors out.  I tried the following:

1)  I thought maybe I messed up the Thermocouple while doing the update, so I changed the Thermocouple.  No go.
2)  I changed the heating element.  No go.
3)  I had a spare heating block and I changed it also.  No go.

I'm afraid that it might be the motherboard.  Any ideas?  What controls the temperature, telling the heating element to stop heating up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the thermocouple is still reporting the temp then yes… it’s the controller board.
Best bet? Sometimes you can find replacements on eBay or you can put in a duet board ( someone posted how on Thingiverse awhile ago).
But honestly… my opinion…
The 2x was never a polished machine in the first place. Time to move on.

After it "errors out", if you go to monitor temperature, does the temperature continue to stay up (or, worse, keep rising)?
Moreover, does the temp climb on its own even before you try to turn on the heater?
If yes, the likely problem is you have a stuck-on transistor.  See https://groups.google.com/g/makerbot-users/c/6ikV54PhWOc?pli=1
It could be the result of a momentarily shorting the output while you were installing your upgrades.  FETs have a tendency to fail "short".
If you are still happy with your machine (I still continue to use my original modded Replicator), I would consider replacing the FET.
