I have a 5th generation replicator and the right x/y stepper motor crapped out. I removed it and confirmed that one of the coils is open. I need to replace it but I can't figure out what to replace it with. Obviously, Makerbot doesn't sell a replacement and the proprietary model number on the motor is not helping me. I know it's a bipolar NEMA 17 with a 5mm shaft with dimensions of 42mm x 42mm x 38mm. The Makerbot model number is SM42HT38C-1004AF. I also know that it has a 1.8 degree step angle from the manual. I just don't know the operating voltage and current or holding torque.

Thank you.

Hi

Do you have fixed your problem?

Yes I did. The first stepper motor I tried didn't work. The gantry just kept trying to push through the frame while the printer was homing. I discovered that the printer uses stepper motor current to sense when the gantry hits the mechanical stops. The Makerbot motors had a 4.1 ohm coil resistance and the one I tried had a 2.6 ohm coil resistance. This meant that the printer never saw a high enough current to know to stop the motor. I couldn't find a motor with a 4.1 ohm coil resistance but I found one that was 5.75 ohms. This motor worked perfectly and I also replaced the other X/Y stepper motor to keep things symmetric. The motor I used can be found here.
