Extruder not loading quandry

Hi all, if anyone has had a similar issue pls lmk.

newish nozzle etc. extrudes plastic manually just fine, ie i push it through with preheat at like 230°. 

when i go to load plastic - the extruder motor works fine, it spins in the right direction, the toothed gear is not clogged with debris, there are on blockages ,no stray bits of plastic. BUT filament will not extrude, it stops maybe 3-5 mm below the thermal barrier opening and goes no where.

i am stumped. manually it works fine when the extruder block is removed. trying to force it thru - no dice. 

any ideas?
