Sorry, I'm new here, so maybe this has been discussed - but I've read
some concern about the radial force caused by the necessary amount of
drive weight. I've built a few wooden geared clocks, and anytime I
tried to drive the escape wheel with one weight it would cause undue
friction on one side of the pinion, due to a tiny bit of flexion.
Instead I used two adjoined drums (basically one drum with a ridge in
the middle to keep the two lines separate) and then ran the line over
two pulleys, one on either side of the drive train, to direct the
weights away from each other.

It's a pretty standard design I think, and maybe you guys have decided
against it?

I think it's a good idea. Someone actually suggested it during
Clockathon #2... We'd need to include the pulleys in the case design,
but that's eminently doable.

It didn't look like it was a problem with the reduced weight required
to drive the clock from gear #2 instead of gear #1... but you never
know, especially if we change the drum design or as the parts wear in.
