I've posted the designs for the printable plastic parts on Thingiverse:

I'm not yet sure how I'll handle version control (I'm leaning toward github, with periodic updates to thingiverse) but if anyone has ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Duane

Are you using the v-wheels that come with the MakerSlide, or have you had any success 3D printing any?

Yeah, I've been using the wheels that inventables offers alongside the makerslide. I tried printing a v-wheel with a custom hole size to be mounted on a motor, but it was a little too rough for video quality. Next time, for prototyping at least, I will print an adapter piece of plastic that fits inside the v-wheels from inventables and mount *that* to the motor. Best of both worlds.

BTW, the custom v-wheel is on my thingiverse page if it's useful to you.

Oh yeah, I saw that... that's what made me wonder if you also tried printed wheels.

The MakerSlide is pretty cheap, but the mounting stuff for the slide starts to add up.

My current slider uses LM8UU bearings, which are dirt cheap... of course the 8mm steel rods are not as cheap... a tradeoff I guess.

I'm still determining what MakerSlide parts I need to order, and deciding how much I want to keep working on my current slider versus just moving all my efforts over to the MakerSlide version.

Yes, I was surprised by the price of all of the little bits adding up as well. It's great to have the meter+ long aluminum extrusion, but then you have to add the specialized parts. At a minimum, you need bearings and the plastic v-wheels. I wonder if we could find another source for those to cut down on costs. I can imagine making a carriage would be pretty easy (a piece of wood with drill holes for bolts?) but a really smooth v-wheel is key for videography.

Do you plan on making your slider available as a kit, or selling it assembled to others? Or is it primarily a one-off project for your own needs?

I'd probably just do a one-off for myself, rent it to some locals I know if they needed it, and publish all the build details...

I'm in the stage where I'm deciding what parts make sense to buy versus fabricate myself...

It sounds like a cool project. I hope that you'll share any cost-savings measures with the list :)
