MAKE KC Meeting
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Meeting called to order about 6:20pm. Four participants present: R.
Fagan, P. Vittorino, P. Piong, and L. Bahl
Discussed:
1.) Organization. Do we want to incorporate as a non-profit
organization and apply for tax-exempt status?
The group thought tax-exempt status would be
helpful in buying items for the group or for any
large projects that we would want to work on as
a group.
Fagan mentioned that it may be helpful in
getting grants.
It might help us secure and maybe get a good
deal on workshop space.
Question raised: What about other Make groups around the
country? What have they done and do they
think they went about things the right way?
2.) Program planning for meetings.
Some ideas were discussed on how we wanted
future meetings to be planned. Some ideas:
A challenge each month. A certain project or
problem will be presented as something group
members could work on. At the next meeting
people would present what they have done. If a
member doesn’t have time to actually build
something they could research the topic and perhaps
bring in an article about it. All the research/
articles could be collected as a sort of knowledge
library that members would have access to in the
future. Ideas for the challenge could be
submitted to the Google Group also.
Piong said he would like to see a series of
“experts” from other groups to come speak, and tell us
about their hobby. Bahl suggested Near Space
Ventures as one such group we might want to get
a speaker from.
3.) Location for meetings/workshops and a make workshop for members
One thing we might want to consider is where
everyone is coming from (a central location might be
very important to the group)
Getting a space is good, especially in the long
run, but maybe we need to work on forming and
organizing the group first.
Overall thoughts expressed that it may be too
soon to be “formal.” Once we get bigger and more
“settled” we can move toward grander ambitions.
Along those lines, if we think of a good group
project it might get more people involved.
Meeting adjourned about 7pm.
All present agreed that we were a small sample of the overall group
and so we merely, humbly offer these thoughts as suggestion for the
group. --L. Bahl
