to Make It Green Houston
Hi All,

I just moved to Houston three weeks ago and am thrilled to stumble
upon your group! It looks like there hasn't been activity for a
couple of months, so I suggest kick-starting a new project. Rather
than suggesting a specific topic, perhaps we could just meet up for
green drinks and do some brain-storming? I have a pretty flexible
schedule and am available most evenings after 6pm.

Also, here's a bit of background about me. I'm a 28 year-old Madison
WI native (Madison is fun city, very similar to Austin) and fully
dedicated to sustainability. I try to be as active as I can and have
been involved in a number of green programs. I received my Master
degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in Sustainable
Energy Systems and recently became employed by Horizon Wind Energy
here in Houston. While in Scotland I visited a wonderful eco-village
called Findhorn on the northern coast. I walked away with many great
ideas and have implemented a few of them at my previous home in
Madison. Specifically, I bought a house in Madison and tried to fully
'greenify' it in a number of ways. Myself and my 5 roommates did the
following:
- had solar thermal panels installed (an outside company did the
installation)
- installed a wood-fired hot tub
- had an energy audit done, and completely weatherized the house (air-
sealing, insulation, etc)
- replaced showerheads with the low-flow versions
- replaced all lightbulbs with CFLs (buy in bulk off e-bay)
- planted 3 fruit trees and started a garden (of sorts)
- and much more

I've also been active on the political front and visited Washington
D.C. in Feburary for a conference called PowerShift: www.powershift09.org
-a mobilization of over 13,000 young people to get new climate change
legislation passed in congress.

Anyway, enough talk for now. I would really like to meet like minded
people and start getting active in Houston. I have a feeling it could
use some help :)

Best,

Paul

Hi Paul. Welcome to Houston. I'm not sure where everyone is living but a central place might be nice to meet. Ziggy's Healthy Grill is nice, and the River Oaks location has a conference room if we have big enough interest-seats about 40.

I'm relatively new to green living, but my daughter just got back from England getting her masters degree in Environmental Change from Oxford. So if I can talk her into going with me, she'd also be a wealth of info.

I'd love to see this group jump back in again, and we all can learn from each other, and maybe get a project or two going.

I'll pitch the first date suggestion:
Thursday evening, July 9 at 6:30 at Ziggy's Healthy Grill.

If this works for you, just reply here and we'll see if we have a few to get started again.

Thanks, Paul for getting the ball rolling agian.

Paul,

Welcome to Houston and to Make It Green. We've been on a little
hiatus for the last few months because I got married at the end of
June. Before that we helped Dean and Nell build a solar hot water
heater. We helped Jim and Eileen and the Japhet neighborhood start a
chicken coop. We're definitely looking for projects for people to
learn hands on skills. Megan Parks and I hosted Green Drinks for over
3 years and we wanted to move from talking about green in Houston to
actually helping people get green skills and complete projects.

July 9th is a possibility. I need to run it past Michele to make sure
that we don't have any other commitments.

Hi Paul,

Welcome to Houston!  You've had an impressive range of experiences.  You're definitely a valuable asset to Houston.

I am interested to see the green drinks get going again.  From what I understand about Make it Green Houston, the green drinks had become too "trendy" so they reorganized things to become more project based.  I personally think there's value to both, even if it means green drinks pulls together a more "yuppie" synergy of ideas and contributions.

I'm curious to learn more about Horizon Wind Energy.

You might also be interested in getting involved in Transition Houston.  Are you familiar with Rob Hopkins and the Transition Movement?  We are at the ground level in kicking off Houston.  There are about 30 people who have been meeting over the last few month, with training planned for September.  We meet on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Urban Harvest 2311 Canal St., Houston 77003 (http://www.urbanharvest.org/about/directions.html), which means we are meeting tonight.  If you want to learn more about Transition Houston, you can visit:  http://transitiontexas.ning.com/group/transitionhouston.

Look forward to meeting you,
Kristin

I would love to meet.  Could we push it to next week?  Possibly July 16th at Ziggy's?

Hi All!

Thanks for all the great responses! Sorry it took me a couple days to
reply--I'm new to Google Groups. Yes actually July 16th would work
better for me as well because I'm going to be out of town until next
Tuesday (7/14). Also, Ziggy's sounds wonderful...it's only 3 blocks
from my house (the one in Montrose that is) and their Edamame is
great--I know from experience :).

How does 7/16 at Ziggy's work for everyone else? Say in the evening
sometime, maybe 7pm?

cheers,

Paul

I can't make next Thursday, but would love to hear an update if someone will write about how the meeting went. I'd love to get involved. I'll try to make the next meeting. If we can schedule it early, then it will be on my calendar and I'll be there--do you hear Michael Jackson singing that now? "I'll be ther-ere!"  Rest His soul.

I look forward to hearing how it went.

I can set up a Google Calendar entry for July 14th at 7 pm, if that's the best date to meet.  It sounds like some people can attend and others can't, but that's always the way with meetings.

Drop an email to this thread letting me know your preferences.

Thanks,

Brian
