We couldn't make it to the talk at Sedition Books Thursday night.  Could one of you who went tell us what happened?

Thanks,
Jim

There was someone there from KPFT covering it. It is supposed to be on shortly if you are in front of a computer or radio.

The guy from Rhizome Collective in Austin gave a basic overview of the
permaculture techniques they are trying. Most of them were things I
was already somewhat familiar with: aquaculture, microlivestock,
growing mushrooms, grey water systems, composting toilets, rainwater
systems, constructed wetlands, solar ovens, etc. One neat thing about
Rhizome's efforts is that they try to do it all on a shoestring with
donated or salvaged materials.

One of the most interesting things for me were 1) the fact that tons
of people showed up, the place was bursting at the seams; and 2) the
comments from the audience afterwards. Several people said things
like "We need to be doing more of these things in Houston" and "why
isn't the Houston sustainability movement more linked up?"

Maybe Make it Green Houston, or the Transition Houston website, would
be a good place to host a virtual hub for all the people in Houston
preparing for peak oil.

Thoughts????

I think that's one of the ironies of Houston. Many people perceive it
as such a brown city, but really we've got a lot going on. Bob
Randall says that the Houston area has about the 7th most number of
community gardens in North America. The Last Organic Outpost is
growing by leaps and bounds. We have three farmers markets.

I think that part of the solution is to begin to get people together
to learn skills and spread the skills. Dr. Randall often says no one
was born with a green thumb, it's a skill that you acquire like
reading. It takes work, but it pays off. That's what I believe is so
exciting about these times of change, it's a possibility to learn new
skills and build resilient communities and have fun while doing it.
