有一個共識: demand 的翻譯不應該包括求 (begging) 這個字.
 

A: What about 堅持達到?

Taiwanese should demand a just judicial system 翻成
台灣人應該堅持達到司法公正 很不錯. 

We demand referendum rights 翻成
我們堅持達到公投權, 有改善的空間.

B: 對於我而言，demand 的意義是『務必要』。

I like it.  But now,
我們 demand 馬英九勿以司法作為政治追殺的工具
becomes
我們 務必要 馬英九勿以司法作為政治追殺的工具.  I need some getting used to it.

C: Simply 『要』.  There is no need to be fancy.

As in:  我們要自由!  要人權!

 
This works very well especially when we make
『要』big, like

我們 要 馬英九勿以司法作為政治追殺的工具.

No one likes my idea of saying
我們 敵蠻 (demand) 馬英九勿以司法作為政治追殺的工具.

我 demand 中文 demand 的同義詞!

Demand 比 ask, beg 來得強. 翻成 要求  便失去它強烈的本意. 

我舉一個例子來說明 demand 這個字的重要性.

Taiwanese should demand a just judicial system 翻成
台灣人應該要求司法公正 是不恰當的. 

跟誰要求?  跟政府要求嗎?  然而政府不是人民的公僕嗎, 怎麼主人反倒要向僕人要求?

Google Translate 給了八個可能的翻譯:

1. 需求
2. 要求
3. 需要
4. 索取
5. 索
6. 要
7. 討
8. 責

上個的例子顯示這八個翻譯都不理想.  我建議

• 不要把 demand 翻成要求
• 暫時把 demand 翻成 敵蠻 (demand), 例如 我們敵蠻 (demand) 司法公正, until an equivalent term is created.

要求 is actually OK.  求 does not necessarily have the connotation of begging.  It also means pursue.  See, e.g., 刑求.
