謝謝你肯花幾秒鐘的時間表達你的意見.
我相信如果大家多關心, 台灣民主化會加速的.

Hi, all:

I agree we shall handle this issue carefully. I also agree that "to some, 4B and 5C are equivalent to the Chinese Koran, or bible". If we claim Taiwan is a democratic country, we will respect the fact that diversity is an essentail element of that democracy.

While we don't make fun of some one's belief/doctrine, we do need to be aware of the concept and rationale behind it.

Green camp and every citizen is Taiwan has right to question the motive of promoting  四書五經. Is it anything to do to help the issues related to the social/economic/political/environmental/cultural aspect in Taiwan? Why now? and what is the urgency of the promotion?

Green camp can even go further to help defining what the Taiwanese cultures are.

A thought to share.

Ginru

We might want to make it popular among all Taiwanese, both in Taiwan and overseas, using "4B5C" to call "四書五經."  It is quite humorous combining Arabic numerals and English letters to refer to these outdated Chinese bibles.  More importantly, the term "4B5C" itself tells people how we see these books.

On the other hand, the DPP has no choice but to respond to Ma's B5C campaign.  It must do it in a sincere and careful manner.  Hopefully, this is the beginning of a cultural war and we Taiwanese will emerge from it victorious..

>I have always been puzzled by why not a single country that has under long influence of Chinese culture is a democracy.  I really think glorifying 4B and 5C has something to do with this.   I think pointing out the fallacies of 4B and 5C without making fun of them can be accomplished and should be done.   To let Ma/KMT continue brainwashing those major in literature will be a shame.

>>I was watching Da-Hwa the other day and was surprised by a caller advising Da-Hwa folks not to make fun of Ma's promotion of "The 4 Books and 5 Classics" (will be referred to as "4B&5C" hereafter).  The caller claimed that criticizing the study of "4B&5C" will hurt the Green Camp because many green folks want their kids to study "4B&5C" as well.  I was appalled.
>>
>>I am an aerospace engineer, and I do not believe "4B&5C" has done me any good after my 1st year in college when "Chinese" was still a class that everyone needed to take.  Even then the only benefit that I got from 4B&5C was helping me to collect a few college credits that I needed for graduation, nothing more and nothing less.  Today, none of the skills that I use to make my living day in and day out has come from 4B&5C.  Then, why do we want to encourage our kids to study this junk?  Even if we assume 4B&5C do have some values, can anyone claim there is something in it that we can learn only from 4B&5C and not from anywhere else?  Can anyone tell me if this is the case?
>>
>>If the many honorable professors of this Forum agree with me that 4B&5C are nothing but junk, then I believe we shall speak out and also speak up so our voices can be heard.  Kids shall spend time on things that can be more useful in their future studies.  Both my kids were born and raised in the States, and both went to engineering schools.  Both had two years of college-level Physics and Calculus under their belt before graduating from high school. How many Taiwanese kids can make the same claim?
>>
>>Do Taiwanese parents wish their kids to be competitive in the international arena?  If they do, would they have wanted their kids to study 4B&5C instead of taking other more worldly courses?

I don't think students have to study 四書五經, we should be able to choose
whether we want to study it. If some really think it's interesting,
maybe school can provide courses for students to dig deeply into them.
The sad part is, the way that teachers make us memorize them spoils
all the fun reading them. I think the meaning of studying 四書五經 is to
understand the idea and learn the moral principles, not to memorize
each character and try to fill in the blanks. The only way to let us
really enjoy studying 四書五經 is stop telling us what we should learn
from them, but let us tell you what we've learned from them.

請大家來思考 這個台灣高中學生 Roxie 的 comment:

I think the meaning of studying 四書五經 is to understand the idea and learn the moral principles, not to memorize each character and try to fill in the blanks.

一個有良心的人可以繼續沈默嗎?
