Conor Oberst sends shivers down my spine, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The straight-from-the-diary lyrics, the sudden screams and that hiccuping vibrato-- the qualities that make him seem raw and, to some, risible-- are also striking and awesome. Oberst is a strange hybrid: He's undeniably a pop star, and also undeniably an indie rocker. On the pop side, he has what music journalist Simon Reynolds identified as the power to compel your gaze, and when he gets it, those wet, penetrating eyes stare straight back. I know it makes me uncomfortable; why can't he just look at his feet and fumble with his guitar and murmur his songs from a distance?
Like seriously, I didn't think bright eyes could get much better but then I discover Digital Ash. It was always one of their albums I never touched, like People's Key or Oh Holy Fools. I decided to give it a try tho and omg it is so amazing. I love the electronic feel it has and it just feels so different from their other work, especially considering it was released the same year as I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. It is so unique and I'm struggling to find a single album of bright eyes I listened to that I don't like, the lowest is a B teir imo and that's People's Key.
Oberst has carte blanche; he can do whatever he wants, because he doesn't care what other people think. His transition is not as graceful as Ben Gibbard's slide from the heart-on-the sleeve mope of Death Cab for Cutie to the electro-pop of the Postal Service, but Gibbard had the experienced Tamborello to co-write songs with him. Digital Ash in a Digital Urn is an experimental album and it's not going to set him back at all; in fact, it probably broadened his horizons and stretched out his creativity. While Digital Ash was a disappointment, I'm Wide Awake proves Oberst is still brilliant, a wonderful songwriter, though he might want to reconsider his path toward digital destruction.
