Precise HD maps for safe autonomous driving

For automated driving to be safe, you need detailed HD maps that are constantly updated. With driving gradually shifting from humans to machines, the role and scope of digital maps must go beyond turn-by-turn navigation and be built specifically for self-driving vehicles. The TomTom HD Map is the next generation, delivering highly accurate, up-to-date and realistic representations of the road.

Interchange navigation presents a range of challenges that are different from those associated with driving on continuous roads. For example, interchanges force drivers to make time-sensitive task demands (i.e., forced-paced tasks). More specifically, drivers at unfamiliar interchanges must read the available signage, observe pavement markings, and determine a path through the interchange before they reach the gore point. Additionally, driver errors at interchanges are often more difficult to correct since drivers may transfer to a grade-separated freeway, highway, or roadway that provides limited access points to return to the original roadway. Clear navigation signage is needed to guide drivers and reduce errors.

The purpose of this project was to develop a method for determining driver expectations at interchanges and to use that method to determine how these expectations affect driver behavior at interchanges that vary in level of complexity, including provision of initial recommendations for navigation signage to aid complex interchange design. Interchange navigation presents a range of challenges that are different from those associated with driving on continuous roads, and driver errors at interchanges are often more difficult to correct since drivers transfer to a grade-separated freeway, highway, or roadway, which provides limited access points for their return to the original roadway. Clear navigation signage is needed to guide drivers and minimize errors. Although there has been previous research performed on signage in general, research specifically on driver expectations and interchange signage has been limited. Moreover, there is little consensus on a single best way to design signs for interchanges, and available data present an incomplete picture of guidance relevant to sign design.

Even though the Arctic ice is melting and Polar routes are being extensively studied, the amount of cargo shipped through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) remains low in comparison to the Suez Canal. Though, the cargo traffic is steadily growing every year. The research shows that the NSR-SCR combined shipping scheme can be more competitive than the use of the Suez Canal Route only. If the shipping company provides sufficient loading on the NSR, uses a reliable ice-class vessel for navigation and the price of crude oil is high, the economic advantage of the NSR-SCR combined shipping scheme is obvious. Ice thickness directly affects the shipping cost. Now, when the Arctic ice is slowly melting due to weather conditions, the cost of icebreaking service is expected to reduce. Also, vessels of some ice classes can sail on the NSR independently. That is why the NSR icebreaker escort fee may be several times lower than the SCR toll.[27]

State Corporation Rosatom assumes the possibility and functions of the NSR and ensures the safety of navigation on the high technological level. Besides organizing the navigation along the NSR and the icebreaking services with the world's only nuclear icebreaker fleet, Rosatom is planning to implement the Arctic Ice Regime Shipping System (AIRSS) methodology. This system will represent a digital space that will provide various services to cargo carriers, shipowners, captains, insurers, and other participants in the logistics market on the NSR. In particular, it involves issuing permits for the passage of vessels, monitoring, dispatching, and managing the work of the fleet. The single digital platform will collect information from all the available sources, for example, hydrometeorological data, the location of ships and icebreakers, port congestion. As a result, users will receive an advanced "ice navigator" that will allow to plot a precise route in view of the changing ice conditions of the NSR. In other words, the study of Sibul et al. proposed a path-finding algorithm for the NSR strategic assessment.[28] It uses real weather as input and find the optimal shipping route.[29]

Truck GPSs are more expensive than car GPSs because of their advanced features specifically designed for trucks, such as mileage logging. Because truckers spend much of their time on the road, having hours of service from a GPS navigation device is very important.

Here, we present the first spatially and thematically highly detailed LULC map for the European Alps. We collected, harmonized and combined freely available datasets from 11 different sources to build a high-resolution map that includes 65 different LULC classes. By including small LULC features, this map is intended to support a wide range of analyses spanning from research to land management and decision making. For example, the spatial impact of linear elements such as roads, rivers and hedges can be analyzed and included in ecological connectivity mapping models or ecosystem service assessments. Local administrations can also benefit from the high resolution of the map, which can support landscape planning and resource-efficient management.

We used the ESRI Land Cover Map 202030 as a base layer to build our LULC map, as it is the only selected land cover dataset with complete geographical coverage for the whole research area. We added land use information to this dataset using the data presented in Table 1. To combine the layers, we first assigned specific codes to each LULC class value in all datasets (Table 2). Reoccurring LULC types across different datasets were assigned the same code (since MMU is very small and mostly pixel-based no further harmonization steps of land use types were necessary). We then overlayed the data by applying a specific layer hierarchy (Table 3) following a decision tree based on data accuracy (i.e., level of thematic and spatial detail). By assigning the value of the highest-ranking layer, we could decide which information to show on the final map, to control the uncertainties built in specific layers (e.g., presence of green linear elements in cultivated areas and grassland) and to include small LULC features (e.g. roads, single buildings, small streams in forests or grassland). All the work was done using ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.

Since the launch of the project, China has invested more than 100 billion USD into BRI-related infrastructure projects according to the MERICS BRI database. Such technical details would not normally find their place in an inland waterway guide, but water is such a critical issue in the modern world that it was thought useful to give this preview. Even on small canals, boaters will occasionally be affected by measures to reduce water consumption during periods of drought, and an understanding of how this new canal will work serves to illustrate the issue of water supply to all summit level canals.
