Hello Everyone - It's been a while since I've checked in here but all
is well with me - weight and nutrition i mean - but my hair has been
falling out in clumps for the past 3 weeks. I finished the program at
the end of August and nutrition wise, not much has changed except that
I don't eat dairy anymore (didn't really eat much prior) and no sugar
and only a glass of wine here and there. I've always eaten well but
needed to take off the weight. I've read that so-called "crash
dieting" can be a factor with extreme hair loss and wondered if anyone
else had/has experienced this and did they notice this to take place
more than a month later??

Thanks very much for your thoughts,
DeeLite

Hi DeeLite,
So good to hear from you!
The hair loss may me hormonal. I was losing my hair before the detox.
I know my
hormones were definately off from being so out of balance as a result
of my obesity.
Since doing detox it has not been falling out like before. I'm still
taking the
Garden Greens products and the Natures Plus Ultra energy shake daily.

Have a fabulous Holiday Season!

I've also been loosing lots of hair, but I felt it was due to the low
carb stuff I'm doing. There is a supplement called BIOTIN that I
picked up and been trying. I've just been taking it a week.

Hi Janice -
I've been back and forth to the Dermatologist now for the past 3 weeks
- turns out I have Telogen Effluvium which is a temporary hair loss
created by stress in various forms. The stress is the sudden weight
loss and change in nutrition during the 3 weeks of the cleanse. While
they say it doesn't happen to everyone - it does happen to some. Lucky
for me. I've been told and have read now that it can occur well after
the cleanse - like for me it started about a month and a half after i
finished the cleanse - and can last for 3 months or so - resulting in
the loss of a third or more of your % of hair. I'm well over a third
and hoping it's starting to taper off. Had blood tests done and I'm as
healthy as an ox - so there's no other reason for what I've been
experiencing and don't have a history of hair loss in my family
either. I am taking multi-vitamins with biotin in them as well - that
is a good supplement to take but the real prescription for this is
time.
So - thanks for sharing - I'm glad I'm not the only one out there
that's been going through this and am here for anyone else who may be
freaked out by this as well.
Hope life's beautiful for you!!

Happy New Year Everyone! I am so glad that I popped my nose over here
this morning. I, too, have been loosing major hair loss the past six
weeks--right after the detox. I can not get in to see a holistic doc
until mid-February. You all have me wondering. Blood work says
thyroid TSH is below 1--and this current doc has never switched a
person to natural. That could be one factor. Hormones with
menopause, according to Dr. Weil. So I am upping Omega 3 and 6. Am
now taking Wild Yam Root for the hormones. I will look strange
without my long gorgeous hair over this new thinner body, but I have
got to keep my sense of humor. New year's group hugs--come on in girls
and give me that BIG HUG. Love support to all, wendy in eastern north

OH MY GOSH!! I have always had tremendously thick hair. It is coming
out in major amounts. I did the detox in AUG finishing up on SEPT
16. I had actually thought at first it seemed my hair wasn't coming
out as much as it did (which wasn't bad, it was normal). But it is
now just litearally coming out in the handfuls. I can't pin point the
time it started. I was at the hair dresser on 12/20 and asked her and
she even nticed the difference. She told me that she had encountered
people with extreme weight loss having this happen to them. She said
it could last 6 weeks. I am hoping I am about 4 weeks into it. I
know that to me my ponytail feels half the size. It is really
panicing me. I was told to go to Walmart and get a generic of
rogaine, but am also worried about the chemicals. It's supposed to be
a leave in that enlarges the folical so that the hair won't fall out.
Doesn't really promote new growth. A couple years ago I was advised
to take OYSTER SHELL CALCIUM (at night just before I went to sleep) to
stregthen my hair, a side effect for em with that was alot of new
growth. I had little sprigs all over m head especially in front of my
hair line. Seriously I looked like I had cut off my bangs real short
in front that is how much new growth I had. I am going to start
those, they are all natural. We'll see how it goes. I planned to do
another detox after the first of the year but really need to after the
holiday food. I wanted to do another detox starting next week but am
a bit nervous about that too. I don't know if I can afford this much
hair loss again a few months down the road. Ladies please keep
posting about this hair loss issue so we can gauge it via each other
and to let others know it can happen and maybe be ready when it does.
Let me just say again, OH MY GOSH!

Ok - here's my update since I was the first to post this topic and
bring it to the awareness of everyone doing this. This hair loss does
not affect everyone who's done the cleanse - but a small percentage of
those who have. Me and now I'm noticing here, and a few others. It is
a result of a major trauma we've undergone - can be anything from a
loss of a loved one, car accident, and simply - a radical change in
nutrition. The good news is that the hair loss is temporary and I can
attest to that. The bad news is that it does last for about 3 and
sometimes 4 months. There really isn't much you can do to stop it - it
has to run it's natural course and when it's finished, it will grow
back. They say you're supposed to lose on average - key word there -
average - 1/3rd of your head of hair. I think I've lost about 2/3'rds
and really was at my whits end. My scalp was all agitated, I had to
wash more often than normal which also depressed me because I'd hate
to be in the shower with a wet - feeling like bald - head and watch
more hair fall out in clumps.

I did and still do take a multi vitamin for women that has a good
amount of biotin in it - that's good for the hair growth.

I was lucky in that I started with a beautiful head of thick long hair
and now am feeling better - 3 months later - that the hair is growing
back. I used to color it every other month to rid myself of the gray -
I've held off doing that for the past 3+ months which is great because
now I can really notice how much my hair has grown in.

Fear not folks - it's temporary - hard to go through - but I have to
say - looking back - if I had this information before I started the
cleanse, I still would've done the cleanse because I've never felt or
looked better. So I'm glad it's temporary but I'm also certain I don't
want to go through it again - so maybe the 3 week program was a one
time experience.

Please let me know if you have any questions - I was literally in the
dermatologists office every other week, so I became fully versed in
knowing what was happening to me.

Chin up!!

WOW. I haven't read the boards much since I ended the detox in Aug.,
but decided to take a peak since I'm on my one week "tune up". I
thought it was just me losing my hair, but now I at least know I have
good company (unfortunately). I think I started losing my hair in the
Oct. time frame, and I have to say I'm still losing above average
amounts. I would estimate I've easily lost 1/3, if not 1/2 of my
already thin hair. I was concerned about my thyroid as well, but a
trip to the Dr. indicated levels were just fine. So now I really do
think it must have been the diet. And I'm a little surprised how long
the loss has perserved given that I really don't follow the
maintenance diet, although I'm pleased to report I'm eating much
healthier and have made some lasting changes to my eating habits.

I've heard some good things about Nioxin products, but don't have any
experience with them. I also use thickening pastes when styling my
hair, which seems to help. I'm anxiously awaiting new hair growth!!

Hi Dee Lite,

You may want to check out www.mercola.com. He has information on
nutritional deficiency attributing to hair loss , and it makes sense.
All of a sudden switching to no fat, no sugar detox could cause hair
loss, depending on what you're used to eating, and what he describes
that each person has their own "metabolic type" . (Think Asians
\Hawaiians\Africans eat certain foods from their "original" geography
that their body then depends upon.)

Here's a direct link to one of the hair loss articles I found:

http://www.mercola.com/2003/apr/9/hair_science.htm and below is part
of the article

"Unfortunately, I (Mercola) did not have the advantage of the Internet
or mentoring by nutritionally wise parents. I was exposed to plenty of
refined sugar in my childhood and when I took over responsibility for
my own foods, I continued the disaster because I was completely sucked
into the low-fat myth.

While a low-fat diet is clearly highly beneficial for about one-third
of the population, what is not beneficial is a high-grain diet.

Like most people who consumed low-fat diets, I regularly consumed
large amounts of whole grains. Sugars and grains will increase insulin
levels, which has been associated with hair loss.

This choice alone would have accelerated my hair loss, but it was
compounded by the fact that I was designed to have a high-fat diet. I
never got the clue that my cholesterol level of 100 was far too low
and a strong indicator that I should increase my fat intake. Why would
I do that when fat was so evil? Or so I believed at the time.

Interestingly, I only relatively recently understood these connections
and have been able to normalize my cholesterol to 200.

Additionally, many of the foods I ate were cooked. I am absolutely
convinced that this was another major factor in my own personal hair
loss. To add insult to injury, for over 20 years I competitively
trained in running events without the benefit of antioxidant
protection. Most likely this was another contributing factor. If I had
the chance to turn back the clock and repeat the experiment in hair
loss, I am strongly convinced that the application of these basic
principles would have preserved my head of hair.

I would encourage individuals experiencing hair loss to consider
applying the program of eating right, which includes eating the foods
for your unique Metabolic Type, as described in detail in my new book,
and also to exercise with appropriate antioxidant protection."

Good luck in finding your nutritional type so you can grow back that
hair!!!

Thanks for the posts Helen/Lucy - all very interesting thoughts. I've
read the article - he's actually talking about baldness which isn't
something we're experiencing. What my dermatologist indicated was
happening to me has in fact turned out to be just that. It's temporary
and due to the dramatic change in nutrition - lack of protein, etc.
I'm happy to report that I'm now at the other end of this hair loss -
all new growth coming in - at least 3 inches worth - and so I'm well
on my way to growing in my beautiful head of thick hair that i had
months ago.

I think the important thing to note for anyone going through this is
that it IS temporary and NOT to panic. For me, I panicked because I
didn't see anyone else mentioning this on this message board and so I
thought it was something more serious. I've always eaten healthy -
just had been carrying extra weight due to lack of exercise and a few
other reasons. So my diet was fine and my eating since the cleanse has
been well adjusted - slightly tweaked from pre-cleanse - and exercise
is up to 6x a week. I've maintained my weight loss and all is well.
I'm glad - well you get what I mean - to read here that I'm not the
only one experiencing this phenomenon and I hope that by posting this
here and keeping the thread alive that others who are going through
the same thing will be comforted in knowing it's not permanent.

Hi! I also have had hair loss since my detox. I thought it was due
to hormone issues since I am pregnant. Apparently, in some pregnany
women you lose hair instead of it thickening. But, after reading
these posts, I wonder if it wasn't due to the detox. I lost maybe a
third of my hair. My hair wasn't thick before but is curly so it
isn't very noticeable to anyone but me. I started using Nioxin
shampoo and scalp therapy. That does seem to help. I have noticed
that my hiar seems to be falling out at a normal rate in the last few
weeks. Just like DeeLite, I would still do the detox again. The
benefits I have seen far outweigh the negatives!
