Help save lives... Help pass LD 1686...
Because of your support and hard work, LD 1686: An Act to Address Preventable Deaths from Drug Overdose has been accepted for consideration in the 2nd session of Maine's 126th Legislature, set to convene in mid January. This bill could come up for public hearing before the Health and Human Services Committee as early as late January. With the hearing looming we need your help to convince the Committee that the people of Maine NEED this bill. Help us secure testimony that our legislators cannot ignore.
An average of 170 Maine people die each year due to a drug overdose. That is roughly 1 person every other day. In Maine drug overdoses kill more people than traffic accidents, or gun violence. And what's more, Naloxone distribution is cost-effective. This is not just sound public health policy, it is not just sound economic policy, it is a MORAL IMPERATIVE.
The Maine Harm Reduction Alliance is seeking...
- parents, family and friends of people that have been afflicted by an Overdose
- supportive medical professionals
- supportive Veterans
- supportive Law Enforcement officials
- people in long-term recovery that may have Overdosed in the past
We need people to testify before the committee about how important this bill is. We need people to submit written testimony to that effect. And we need people to call their legislators when the time is right.
With the Committee meeting yet to be scheduled, NOW is the time to start getting organized and reaching out to key Committee members.
