Hello everyone,

Thank you Rosie for adding me to the group. My name is Eliza Wheeler, and I currently work with the Drug Overdose Prevention and Education (DOPE) Project in San Francisco, a program of the Harm Reduction Coalition. The DOPE Project is a 10-year old naloxone distribution program funded by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. We distribute naloxone at needle exchange programs, the San Francisco County Jail, drop-in centers, drug treatment programs and in a variety of other community-based settings. We have trained about 4,000 drug users in SF and just received our 1000th overdose reversal report!

As part of the Harm Reduction Coalition, we also provide technical assistance and support to programs and individuals wishing to implement overdose prevention and naloxone distribution and compiled all of the resources for starting a naloxone program here, in this online resource: http://harmreduction.org/issues/overdose-prevention/tools-best-practices/

By way of history, I was also part of the early underground naloxone distribution efforts in Massachusetts when I ran a needle exchange program there, and along with a group of others involved in naloxone and overdose prevention, helped advise the Massachusetts Department of Public Health when they were developing their state-wide naloxone distribution program in 2007. The program where I worked became one of the 6 initial pilot sites in Mass. I've been doing naloxone distribution in some capacity for around 12 years now and it is the most powerful and inspiring work in all of the harm reduction world, for me.

I am very excited about the momentum in Maine and would love to be of assistance as you work towards increasing access to naloxone!
