Advocacy Update:

For those of you who haven't heard, now is the time to take a moment to celebrate. On November 21st the Legislative Council voted UNANIMOUSLY uponto accept LR 2626: An Act to Address Preventable Deaths Due to Drug Overdose into the January session of the 126th Legislature!

This bill, put forward by Representative Sara Gideon of Freeport would save lives by enhancing access to Naloxone, an opiod agonist that temporarily counteracts the effects of an opiate overdose. While initially rejected, due to the hard work of advocates and with the help of our friends at the Drug Policy Alliance the Council voted upon appeal to accept this important bill into the next session.

But the work has only begun. Over the next month and into January we need to reach out to key members of the Health and Human Services Committee, line up testimony and otherwise ensure that this bill moves through Committee as smoothly as possible.

Key to this effort is the support of constituents of members of the Health and Human Services Committee, and constituents in Hancock County and the towns of Chelsea and Washington in Kennebec and Knox counties. We are also looking for passionate advocates representing Law Enforcement, Veterans or family members of those who have been suffered a drug overdose. If you, or anyone you know, fit the bill or are interested in advocating around this issue contact us by emailing ME...@downeastaidsnetwork.org or calling (207) 667-3506 x13.

Advocates are also invited to a conference call to help strategize and coordinate outreach efforts over December and January. The call will be held on Friday, December 13 at 2pm.

Call in information:
Dial-in Number: (712) 432-0255
Access Code: 888482#

Help is needed with fundraising, advocacy and communication in particular. Volunteers should be technologically savvy, able work from home, require minimal supervision and have a passion for harm reduciton.

Know of someone who might be interested? Email ME...@downeastaidsnetwork.org or call (207) 667-3506 x13.

Support the MEHRA:

The Maine Harm Reduction Alliance began as a network of syringe access providers in late 2011. Recognizing the need for greater collaboration and coordination, providers volunteered their time to help improve and promote harm reduction services in our state.

Today the MEHRA continues to strive to fulfill their mission: To enhance the provision of harm reduction services throughout Maine through education, advocacy and action. Interested? Intrigued? Impassioned? Consider supporting the MEHRA and its efforts.

All donations go to the coordination of the Alliance and it's priority goal for 2013-2014, funding syringe access services.
