Please see below, if you would like an opportunity to weigh in on proposed climate mitigation and adaptation strategies for coastal and marine communities, livelihoods, and waters and ecosystems.

Subject: Maine’s Coast and Climate Change: Your Voice is Needed!

Ivy,

Casco Bay needs your voice!

The Maine Climate Council seeks public feedback on the draft strategies to address and adapt to climate change. You can help shape Maine’s climate action plan by taking two short surveys (each survey takes about 5 minutes to complete). These surveys identify strategies that address climate change in coastal and marine environments. You will be asked whether these strategies are a good fit for your community’s needs. You can also identify concerns and suggest ideas and strategies that are not included in the draft recommendations.

The first survey is on the Council’s Coastal and Marine Working Group’s proposed strategies. I am serving on this Working Group and am heartened by how comprehensive and integrated the eight strategies are to protect our coastal waters and marine heritage.

If you have an additional five minutes, please also take the Community Resilience, Public Health and Emergency Management Working Group’s survey. This part of the Climate Council is focused on protecting our roads, infrastructure, and homes from sea-level rise and on protecting public health.

Background

The Maine Climate Council is tasked with developing an action plan for the state to address and adapt to climate change. The Council has six Working Groups. I have been honored to serve on the Coastal and Marine Working Group since September 2019.

In May, we invited you to participate in a survey that evaluated this Working Group’s draft recommendations. Your voices were heard, especially with regard to the need to prioritize treatment of stormwater pollution. Our recent Casco Bay and the Maine Climate Council: A Casco Bay Matters Event, highlighted this effort, and if you missed it, you can watch this video of the presentation to learn more.

The Community Resiliency Working Group also has been tackling important coastal issues. Together, the recommendations of these two groups present a comprehensive set of recommendations for Maine’s marine resources and coastal communities. While the links to the surveys above highlight strategies from these two Working Groups, you can dive more deeply into the recommended strategies on the Council’s website, which has a wealth of information.

Please email me if you have questions, and thank you for caring about the health of Casco Bay.

Sincerely,
Ivy Frignoca
