From Brian Beal, Professor of Marine Ecology, Director of the Marine Science Field Station, University of Maine at Machias at Downeast Institute:
The work that was performed in Freeport at multiple sites over three years (2014-2016) has finally been published. He has presented this information several times in different venues, and the article will appear in the September/October issue of the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology.
The results suggest that large-scale deployment of shell hash in an attempt to mitigate effects of low pore water pH on clam (both soft-shell and hard-shell) recruits is not warranted, and that protecting these small clams from their predators would be a wiser investment of time.
