Singers
The
monthly Central Maine Sacred Harp Singing will be held on Sunday, December 18, from 2-5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1 Park Street,
Waterville, Maine 04901. The shapenote singing is a free,
participatory event, not a performance. No experience is necessary and
beginners are warmly welcomed. Books are available for loan or
purchase.
We will also sing form the American Christmas Harp. If you have copie(s), please bring those books with you as well. There will be a limited number of loaners available.
There will also be a potluck meal after the singing
(from 5 to 6 pm) at the church, so please bring something to share.
There are kitchen facilities available at the church.
The
singing is primarily from the The Sacred Harp, a shapenote tunebook that
has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844.
The music consists of hymns, fuging tunes, anthems, and other songs in a
style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day.
