I, Jessica Karels, as Head Coordinator, hereby propose
the removal of Administrative Bylaw 9.B. (Code
of Conduct for the Council,
Storyteller, and Coordinator List-Servers).
While we believe that this CoC may have been brought
forth with good intentions, we also feel that it places an
unfair amount of power in the hands of the Exec Team to
drive and potentially manipulate conversations on the
various lists. Further, we feel that it creates a conflict
of interest on the part of an Exec team who wants to take a
more proactive stance in shaping the future of our
organization. It would be like having someone who is both
the team captain as well as a referee.Â
Our organization faces cultural issues when it comes to
trust. A Code of Conduct,
when implemented in an atmosphere of distrust, is often
perceived as a means for those in power to assert their
authority over others who vocalize an opposing view. Even
if the authority to enforce this Code
of Conduct was placed in the hands of
a "neutral" third party, the policy as currently phrased
could still be used as a weapon against others.
The issues that we face on the admin lists are not those
of civility and politeness, they are far deeper cultural
problems where this CoC does more to harm than help.
