Dear Friends of Mainers with Disabilities,
LD 1666 was supported unanimously by the HHS Committee, the House, and the Senate. But it is now on the "Special Appropriations Table", where it will die for lack of funding, unless the Appropriations Committee and legislative leadership support the bill.
The bill would raise the "state SSI supplement" for a single person from $10 a month to $65 a month (in line with cumulative federal cost-of-living increases since 1974). The bill would also eliminate the "marriage penalty" in the state SSI supplement, so that a married couple would get "two persons worth" of the state SSI supplement ($130 a month) instead of paying a large "marriage penalty" by having their total state SSI supplement reduced.
To get this bill funded, please contact legislative leaders and Appropriations members IMMEDIATELY and ask them to FUND LD 1666 TO RAISE MAINE'S PALTRY STATE SSI SUPPLEMENT AND ELIMINATE THE MARRIAGE PENALTY IN THE STATE SSI SUPPLEMENT.
Approps Members:
Senate Legislative leadership:
House Legislative leadership:
thank you!
