The Maine Legislature has passed LD 840, and it is on its way to the governor's desk.
This bill eliminates the marriage penalty on the very modest state supplement to SSI payments. Without this bill, when both members of a married couple receive SSI because of disability, one of them sees their SSI payment reduced by half. Maine can't change this on a federal level, but at least LD 840 changes it for the state supplement to SSI payments.
(Basically, the couple would get a total of $20/month in state SSI supplement instead of $15/month--the same $20/month that they'd get if they were single and pooled their payments.)
