There are currently 50 sandhill cranes along route eight in Smithfield.

They move around.  Sometimes they're on Martin Stream Rd. in Norridgewock.  These were on the flats on the west side of Rte. 8, just below Sand Hill Rd.

Wow!  Nice number.  Maine sure is the place for Sandhills in the northeast now.  Very cool.

I just got a report from Louis Bevier that the flock has split up and  there are none in Smithfield, but 20-23 on Martin Stream Rd., in Norridgewock.  They move around a lot.

Thanks to all for these helpful postings. Many birders have helped me try to locate sandhill cranes this past year, but I haven’t been successful until today, in the heavy rain (so photos aren’t the best). About 30 birds located at 3:30 on Martins Stream Road. Just beautiful. And thank you again to all past and present guides. We saw no other birders at all.

Great that you finally got to see them!   We're a bit spoiled up here in southern Somerset County.  They congregate in those cornfields every fall.

Nice post! Have not had the pleasure of seeing them up here myself. I am not familiar with the Norridgewock or Martin Stream Road area but I have to ask what are the “sticks” or stumps that are in the field the cranes are in? Any idea where they might be breeding?

I defer to someone with more knowledge on the  subject, but these cranes, for the most part, don't breed in the local area.  This seems to be a staging area for cranes that have bred in various places throughout the State.  There is at least one pair of cranes which nests locally, in a marsh/bog in Smithfield.

The "sticks"  in the picture are corn stalks.  The cranes seem to prefer cornfields which have been recently harvested.
