Do we have kinglets in Maine all winter? I thought them to be migratory, but I just read in Sibley's that "GOlden-crowned is particularly fond of conifers year-round." ("The Sibley Guide To Birds" pg. 394). As insect eaters, if they stay here, do they switch to berries like Amrobs do? Most of the berries are as big as the Golden-crown's head! If they stay all winter, do they prefer blended or single malt Scotch? Would someone, anyone, all of you'ze please let me know about this? Thanks in advance for your time. It's a serious question.

Hi Robin,

I have seen a few GC Kinglets in and around Cherryfield when we are up
there for the winter break. It always amazes me to see such tiny,
seemingly delicate birds surviving in a climate that has driven most
birds south.

take care,

Robin,

Thanks to the work of Bernd Heinrich, we now know that Golden-crowned Kinglets feed on insects (undoubtedly hard frozen) throughout the winter.  Heinrich found that most of the prey were caterpillars of geometrid moths. Here's a link to his paper in the Wilson Bulletin:

Or check out Heinrich's book Winter World: the Ingenuity of Animal Survival. It's fascinating.

Thanks to all for the responses to this question. I am writing an essay about the two kinglets we have here and will include this info. Bernd Heinrich was a student of my grandfather's interestingly enough. I have couple of his books, but not Winter World. The trees are full of these little guys zzzzzzt'ing away like mad right now here in The Burg, almost maddening, actually. It's kind of a wintery version of a cicada whine. Oh, all agree: along with the bugs in their mugs, they prefer single malt Scotch. thanks again, RRR
