Yup, more Pine Grosbeaks (photo ops!), Freeport, 11/19

Hi all,
While it's readily apparent that there are lots of Pine Grosbeaks throughout most of the state at the moment, I though I would mention the flock of 21 that are currently at the LL Bean Headquarters on Route One in Freeport (about a mile north of the store).

Many are at eye-level and feeding readily as folks walk into work. The photo opportunities are perfect should anyone still be looking for some.

Oh, and if you are there, could you please collect any birds you find killed below windows and document any window strikes? The highly reflective glass here is very dangerous and single black "raptor" silhouettes offer minimal deterrence. This has been brought to LL Bean's attention before, and I plan on bringing it up again as one bird was killed this morning.

Still a few birds there at the Casco HQ in Freeport. Just saw four in the tree just to the right of the bldg entrance.

I spoke with an LLBean security guard there this morning.  He suggested that folks check in at the reception desk upon arrival so that they know who's around and why.  Also, they do check cars for parking stickers, so be aware of that as well.

Just a reminder that isn't not actually legal to collect dead birds without a scientific collection permit. I encourage you to use your cell phones or cameras to get photo documentation; hopefully that will be convincing enough.

I just wanted to post a clarification here, as my earlier message was brief to the point of inaccuracy.  Judy is right that the best way to document the window stirkes/kills is with a photograph.  My request for specimens was meant to be a suggestion that since less-common birds like this are valuable to science as specimens, I didn't want the remains to go to waste.  Under the "good faith" clause(s?) of said regulations folks can posess dead birds for a short period of time with the intent of getting them to an institution that can use them.  This includes some universities and the Maine State Museum.  You can get in touch with your closest school or museum to see if they are interested in these specimens.  For rare birds like this, we will still offer to act as a short-term middle-man to ensure that these birds are put to some good use.
