Errors opening attachments

I can no longer open attachments by clicking on them in a
message or the browser. I get the following message:

You do not have sufficient privileges to perform this operation
(MacOS Error code: -5000)

I'm logged into the admin account when I see this message - so
I'm not sure who else to go to for permission.

I *can* drag the attachment to the desktop and open it there -
which, I guess, takes less permission. At least I can open it somewhere!

Any wisdom about this is most welcome.

So, what has changed on your machine?

This generally means that the directory in which the OS creates
temporary items is no longer writeable (i.e. a permissions problem).
