All of a sudden, every message I try to send instead becomes queued
and its impossible to send. No keyboard or menu command works to send
it. This happens to every message from every account.

Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it?

Sounds like Mailsmith may be having some problem talking to your
SMTP server, so it can't send messages and queues them to try
again later. Are you getting any error messages? Does Mailsmith
log anything relevant if you turn on 'Log mail activity' in
preferences and try to send a message? Can you send messages
with a different mail app (Mail, Thunderbird, etc.)? If you're
comfortable on the command line (e.g. using Terminal), can you
telnet to your mail server on port 25 (or whatever your SMTP
submission port is)? There are probably other troubleshooting
steps that you could try, but these should give you a starting point.

Indeed, there were error messages I finally saw that told me to
contact my ISP. I've now worked it out with them.
