Is there a way to escape a hyphen in the email address or username? If I provide an email address like "-f te...@ex-ample.com" sending the mail fails. If I omit those and provide the from address in the interactive dialogue, it works.

I guess i am not quite sure what kind of problem you're having. Hyphen is a valid character in a domain name and there is no need to escape it. Usually a character can be escaped with \, but it depends on the platform and the shell you are using. Please run mailsend with -v and post the output after removing private information.
