Maybe there should be a yahoo group created for snort users. Yahoo has
plenty of resources.

That would be great.

Minus, you know, the advertisements.

Actually, that would suck.

In general, people haven't posted here items that were extremely
time-sensitive ("I'm currently getting attacked by this obscure pattern
and am trying to formulate a response to it and have Snort log more of
it"). The absolutely vast majority of posts to snort-users are setup
posts (I have to admit to some minor irk that the vast majority of setup
posts are not Snort setup posts, but that's neither here nor there).

So why is a 1-5 hour lag time in responses unacceptable?

sourceforge has advertising at the bottom of all messages sent using the
current mailing list.

There are different levels of advertising. The reason you may
not have noticed sourceforge's ads is that they are waaaay below
the intrusive level of Yahoo ads, which in some case force you
to click another link to get to the message you wanted to look
at (they MITM you with an ad). I'm on a Yahoo group right now
for something else and I'm staying put until someone crowbars me
outa here.

BTW, this is probably the highest level of free support I've
ever seen, even if the posts are slow to appear. And when I
post, I generally see my own reply within 20 minutes.

Yeah, I don't know what the problem is. We'd probably be better off
without anyone who would prefer Yahoo. Sourceforge rocks. If you don't
like it, go away...

For me, the postfix-users list is, maybe, slightly better with support,
but that's quite possibly because I've had to ask that list for more
help than I've had to ask this list. But damn, this list is quite fine
also.

I sent Sourceforge a support request on behalf of the project and it's
faster than it was. We were experiencing 3 day delays previously. They're
down to hours now, which is considerably more reasonable. Sourceforge does
a very good job considering they don't charge anything.

Either people use the list more intelligently or it will become moderated
and all the ACID/Snortcenter/how do I get X working with Y and Z (all of
which have been answered countless times in the past) will be moved
elsewhere.

If a user asks a question that's already been answered, the first line of
the message should be crystal clear:

This question was answered in August of 2002 in this message (URL HERE).
Search the snort-users archives:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=snort-users&r=1&w=2 BEFORE POSTING.

If you're frustrated by the status quo, change it. You're the users, lead
by example. Whether a new Yahoo group is created or a Sourceforge list is
created is irrelevant. There's no reason to believe it will be any more
useful if the bulk of the traffic carried by the list is questions whose
answers are already available. I'll leave the rest to your imagination,
but I'll mention that a moderated list is by no means out of the picture as
a possible solution.
