I finaly got the mashine up and running again =D

I have an current "issue" with Samba 2.0.7 and an Win98 box.
Peak at ~800kb/s one way, 20-30kb/s other way (10MB enviroment)
I have some captures I will show Chris.
Could be relevant in this contex..

ou're right, the machine is filling up a tempfile. During the pause between write-request and writing my machine has heavy disk activity. When I copy a very large file (large than this one) the win-client times out after 60 seconds and a file containing zeros is stored where the copy should be (with exactly the size of the copy). The Samba-Server behaves like "strict allocate" was set to "yes" . But it's turned of.. Maybe Samba isn't recognizing (or minding) the option ?

Most interresting is the gap between the beginning of the transaction and the actual writing (writing begins at about 45sec)
Any traffic above this point is just minor. After the 45sec the "real" transfer begins.

As I found no way to search for checksum errors, I didn't found any..

Yes, that's normal. the NBSS messages are the continuation data that
does not fit into the first SMB Write packet. If you total their sizes,
subtracting header information, the result will be equal to the Write
Count stated in the SMB WriteRaw request which is sent in the beginning.

Sometimes there are 6 of them one after another.=20

Let me summarize what we have:

-Win98 doing a write request to the last byte of the file to be copied
-My machine creates a tempfile of that size and if that takes too long we get a timeout

-> My questions: What is samba doing if strict allocate is set to "no", is it ignoring the write request ?
Does it pass the write request on to the system, and the kernel creates the tempfile ?
What can I do to check who's fault the creation of the tempfile is ?
