How to Wire a Star Delta Motor Starter with Timer
A star delta motor starter is a type of reduced voltage starter that is used to reduce the starting current and torque of an AC induction motor. It works by switching the motor windings from a star (or wye) configuration to a delta configuration after a preset time delay. This reduces the voltage across each winding and lowers the current and torque during the start-up phase.

In this article, we will show you how to wire a star delta motor starter with timer using a simple control circuit diagram. We will also explain the working principle and advantages of using a star delta starter.

Star Delta Motor Starter Control Circuit Diagram
The typical star delta control circuit wiring diagram in the CAD drawing below will help you follow the explanation. Star delta motor control circuit. CAD drawing by ianjonas[^1^].

The star delta control circuit consists of push button switches, auxiliary contacts and a timer. The main components are:

S1: Start push button switch
S2: Stop push button switch
K1: Main contactor
K2: Star contactor
K3: Delta contactor
KT: Timer relay
M: Three-phase AC induction motor
Star Delta Motor Starter Wiring Procedure
The wiring procedure of a star delta motor starter with timer is as follows:

Connect the three-phase supply lines (L1, L2, L3) to the terminals of the main contactor (K1).
Connect the three motor windings (U1, V1, W1) to the terminals of the star contactor (K2).
Connect the other ends of the motor windings (U2, V2, W2) to the terminals of the delta contactor (K3).
Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of K1 and K2.
Connect another jumper wire between the terminals of K1 and K3.
Connect the coil of K1 to one terminal of S1 and one terminal of S2.
Connect the other terminal of S1 to L1.
Connect the other terminal of S2 to L2.
Connect one terminal of KT to L3.
Connect the other terminal of KT to one terminal of K2 and one terminal of K3.
Connect an auxiliary contact of K1 (normally open) in series with the coil of K2.
Connect another auxiliary contact of K1 (normally closed) in series with the coil of K3.
Set the timer relay (KT) to the desired time delay for switching from star to delta.
Star Delta Motor Starter Working Principle
The working principle of a star delta motor starter with timer is as follows:

When S1 is pressed, K1 is energized and closes its main contacts and auxiliary contacts. This connects L1, L2, L3 to U1, V1, W1 and U2, V2, W2 respectively. At the same time, K2 is energized through K1's auxiliary contact and closes its main contacts. This connects U1, V1, W1 together in a star configuration. The motor starts running in star mode with reduced voltage and current.
When S1 is released, K1 remains energized through its holding contact. K2 also remains energized through K1's auxiliary contact. The timer relay (KT) starts counting from zero.
When KT reaches the preset time delay, it opens its contacts and de-energizes K2 and K3. K2 opens its main contacts and disconnects U1, V1, W1 from each other. K3 closes its main contacts and connects U2-V1, V2-W1, W2-U1 in a delta configuration. The motor switches from star mode to delta
