system freezes at logoff from kde?

hi there.

don't know if i should ask here or at a debian group, so i just start
here.

three days ago i installed debian 5 with kde on a pc. looks fine so
far, only mysterious effect is that when i log off from kde the system
goes to a freeze where nothing seems to work anymore: the screen goes
blank and that's it. switching to a console / tty doesn't work. only
hitting the reset / power button "helps".

where should i look first (and next)?
