Kate does not save

This obviously cannot be happening, and yet...
After editing a file, I either type ctrl-s, ctrl-l, or I click the save
button. Lately (meaning this problem didn't used to occur), Kate does
not always respond to these actions by saving the file. It clears
indications that the file was edited, but the changes are not actually
saved. I find that if I click on the save button many times (e.g., >
20), I can usually get it to save the file. I have had better luck using
Save as to overwrite the file, but I don't have enough experience with
this technique to know whether it always works. Don't ask about
permissions because the file does eventually get saved (without adjusting
permissions). The disk is only half full. Any other suggestions?
