I am a regular user of MS Word, and am getting more and more fed up with
Microsoft, so I have been looking with great interest at OpenOffice.org
Writer.

It seems like a great program, except that there is one feature I use
extensively in Word that I haven't yet found in Writer: namely the ability
to create cross-references to the number of a numbered list. In other words,
the cross reference shows the number of the referenced item in the list, and
changes automatically if the position in the list changes. This is
particularly useful for papers with reference lists at the end.

Am I missing the way this is done in Writer, or is this a feature that's not
available? And if the latter, does anyone know if there are plans to include
something like this in the next version?

Many thanks

I actually am an unsophisticated computer user volunteering as a
greeter for OOo. I don't know the answer to your problem, but as a
greeter, I have some resources for you compiled by people who might
know the answer. You might be able to find the answer in the
resources below. Also, a more experienced computer user might
reply to you on this list, so you might want to subscribe to this
list if you haven't done so already. In the meantime, here is my
tip sheet for resources that might help you. Thanks for using OOo!

There are several good FAQs on the OpenOffice.org website
forproblems.Click on this link and select a
FAQ.

http://www.openoffice.org/faq.html

There is also a good documentation project:

http://documentation.openoffice.org/

Also, try going to the archives at us...@openoffice.org and doing
asearch. Your question has probably already been asked and
answered.

http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html

If that doesn't work, subscribe to the us...@openoffice.org list
by clicking on thesame list above. You will get lots of email, but
you will also probably find an answer to your question within an
hour, andyou will not get TOO much email in that one hour. Then
when you have gotten an answer to your question, it will be
easy for you tounsubscribe by following the instructions at the
bottom of the emails you will get.

Or, try going to these excellent external resources for OOo:

http://api.openoffice.org/TipsAndTricks/external.html

http://www.linuxjournal.com/categories.php?op=newindex&catid=12

If that still doesn't work, you might want to consider buying one
of theseveral great books on using OOo, such as Solveig Haugland
and Floyd Jones' book theOpenOffice.org 1.0 Resource Kit. Solveig
also sellsworkbooks, etc, and there are lots of other authors with
competingproducts, too. You can find a partial list
here:

http://www.burningsuit.co.uk/training/OpenOffice/books.htm

And you can find a very complete list here:

http://www.bytebot.net/openoffice/faq.html#General12
http://www.sover.net/~mackmoon/OOoHelpOutline.html

In addition, Sun Microsystems makes available a manual for its Star
Office product, which is the kissing cousin of OOo.

Here are some books in German on using OOo:

http://de.openoffice.org/about-literatur.html

Here's the link for a guy doing an upcoming book in Portugese, for
both Portugal and Brazil

Vitor Domingos <v...@paradigma.co.pt>

Here is a link on how to use OOo. It is a really excellent
tutorial by a community volunteer.

Here are some resources available on Amazon. If you can't find
something to help you on this link, you really must have an
obscure problem:
