e17 wont work without those - at least compositing wont, and its on by
default. you can just download nwere xlib libs from xorg and compile them like
u compile the rest of efl/e. though without suppport on the
xserver itself for thses new protocols... u're still back to problem 1.

I will take to admin install xlibs but can you please tell me least version at least required for e17 ?

something after 2007. :) (i dont know the exact version #. it needs those
functions though - as i said. you can compile and install the x libs ourself
just like you do to e - you dont have to REPLACe existing ones, just add new
ones in a lib path that is used before the system ones - use ld_library_path
etc.)

In my home laptop I can able to build all the modules without any issues
and I am trying to use E17 in my office Linux server.
Yes, the Linux server is running on bit old libraries but I don't think, IT
will upgrade software. So is there any way I can skip this errors and make
it work for old distros?

I was compiled other libraries but not x servers. It looks like too many packages to compile and xorg documentation is not very helpful for x newbie and I cannot use git due to proxy restrictions. I am trying get step by step compilation process.

i feel i'm repeating myself... you only have to compile the x LIBS. LIBS. this
will get u the functions u need. server u wont be able to do i think because x
needs to be setuid root - unless u are admin... good luck. :) u can fix the
libs - server, you can't.

you just need xproto + xlibs.
just remember that compositing will be broken for you due to your server being
old anyway, but e/efl will compile and run but compositing may fail (and we
will be moving to compositing only in future).

Oops! Won't we have an option to switch it off if we want to?

in future - no. for e17 release it'll stay a module, but after that it'll be

err thats confusing.. let me try again:
in future. not for e17 release. it'll stay a module, but after that it'll be
compositing only. get used to it - i suggest u use it and report bugs/issues. :)
(there's a whole essay i can write up as to why this needs to be done - but
it's either have a pretty inefficient display path that can do both, or an
efficient one that does one or the other. right now we consume massively more
memory than we need to when compositing, and we have all kinds of limitations
(some like to call them bugs) due to having to cram everything into windows
when we want content to expand beyond them. also not being able to assume
efficient compositing means we cant have rounded window borders and do other
design elements that cant be done efficiently non-composited, but can be done
efficiently, nicely and beautifully when compositing.)
Well, I can't say it is bug(s) but it is a matter of overall responsiveness
and resources used, especially on older systems. Composite uses (slightly)
more CPU and memory on my amd64 box and more so on an old x86 with a PIII on
it.
Plus when say I watch something in mplayer and I move focus to another window,
then the mplayer window becomes transparent and the picture fades. Since the
cursor does not automatically follow my eyes I just switch composite off.

So would that be the standard E17 comp module, the extras comp-scale
module, or one of the others?
Also, would they interfere with 3D applications? I use a 3D virtual
world viewer all the time, and develop them. I've not used composite
yet since I thought they used OpenGL, and might interfere. Guess I'll
have to bite that bullet. lol

comp-scale isnt a compositing module - it just does expose' like window scaling
using the comp module canvas :)

comp works both in software and gl - you can choose in the config. it should
work find ith both but gl should normally give you better performance. gl
compositing and gl apps dont conflict - it's meant to work. works for me on
nvidia drivers, nouveau and intel drivers.

the lowest-end machine i've use it on is a pentium-m@600mhz - it works very
well there. sure - not silky smooth but very usable... considering its copying
mountains of data around and rendering everything with the cpu (clients
included) it's pretty amazing. :) seriously... software compositing is working
(decently) on PHONES... yes - its a price to pay - software compositing adds an
extra copy from x to local data first before drawing and then writing it back
to x - so it adds extra overhead. theres no zero copy path like gl +
texture-from-pixmap.

you can select what style u want with compositing - its there in the comp gui
to select. you can have the fading disabled - wobbles too etc.
Hmmm ... my PIII comes up with this compositor warning:
"Your screen does not support OpenGL. Falling back to software engine"
It seems it doesn't like the Radeon Mobility M6 LY that this old laptop is
running. I don't recall having this problem before. I should try a later
snapshot to see if it persists.
I can see in top enlightenment runs between 3.4 - 5% of the CPU with bursts up
to 35.9 - 54% when I move between windows (a couple of aterms and a xterm).
Without composite enlightenment shows between 0.5 - 2.5% of the CPU with
bursts up to 7.9% when I move between windows.
So, yes it is usable, but if I am doing something heavy on this little box
like compiling, compressing files, etc, then it slows down noticeably and this
is why I would rather give up compositing effects for functionality.
Are there some settings in the composite configuration, which will minimise the
load?

I'm seeing 30 to 50% of one core being used with the composite module
turned on, even worse in software mode, and that was with it sitting
idle. It did indeed interfere with my 3D app, it stuttered. I jiggled
the settings somewhat, but did not get much better than that.

What version of e/efl are you using. There is a bug in the nvidia drivers
and raster had made a workaround for this a month or two ago.
>
evas is the compositing engine. evas needs a gpu (and opengl implementation)
that supports GLSL shaders. that means opengl-es2 level stuff (most modern arm
soc's with gpu's do this - so even on your phone and tablet), and for desktop
it means something like a geforce 6xxx or newer - don't know about ati cards.
for intel - not sure, but the gma3150 and 945gm definitely do shaders (tho 3150
has the problem that it has pixel shaders only in hardware - it does vertex in
software and that hurts a lot for text and complex clipping geometries).
> I can see in top enlightenment runs between 3.4 - 5% of the CPU with bursts

yup. expect it to consume as much cpu as it can get its hands on to keep up
with the workload. the more it has to update/re-render, the more it will have
to use (the more pixels and the more frames).

not going to happen for E. having a non-compositing path is unsustainable if we
want to move ahead and implement new and interesting things. to sustain such a
path means holding us back in a half-arsed hobbled world. if you are compiling,
compressing and doing heavy work on a p3... in this day and age, i'd be amazing
it still managed to boot. :) seriously - with x, and software compositing, we
pay about a 100% overhead for software compositing compared to opengl (when it
comes to pixel paths). there is nothing we can do about that without some x
extensions OR by going down to dri/drm and then we have to build a special
solution per driver as the drm lib apis vary, AND then it means also driver
changes to allow for swapping, not copies). technically if we were a wayland
compositor we could get rid of that overhead :)
i put up a video of software comp:
old sony vaio x505 laptop, pentium-m @ 600mhz, 1024x768 screen, software
compositing.
> Are there some settings in the composite configuration, which will minimise

disable smooth scaling. use a style with no translucency (default fades
windows out and wobbles them on focus change - use the still style instead of
default for example). also last week i fixed an overdraw problem in evas where
its clip-outs had it drawing much more than it should (though you dont notice
except with performance)
it's not idle. something is re-rendering continually. are you on up-to-date efl?

you enabled opengl AND texture-from-pixmap? i've had e comp working silky
smooth on a gf6600 with 3520x1200 of pixels. games pay the price of another
buffer copy - that's it. nb i did add some options for nvidia's driver:
Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
Option "Coolbits" "7"
Option "UseEvents" "True"
Option "OnDemandVBlankInterrupts" "True"

wait a sec.. your nvidia drivers are ANCIENT... like from when dinosaurs
roamed the earth! get an update man! i can have compositing on this GTS450
(nvidia) without hassles - yes its more powerful than yours, but this really
only matters to complex shaders and really nasty geometry. as such i have run
and recorded a whole bevy of tests with the unigine heaven benchmark (modern
game engine that supports linux along with other platforms). i can enable or
disable tessellation and tessellation HURTS per - but thats irrelevant to
compositing other than showing that a very complex gl using game can work
without issues with compositing on. as such performance isnt great until i tune
down quality to absolute lowest levels. also remember i have 2 screens
(3520x1120). results:
| test | comp on | comp off |

no artifacts, no stuttering in compositing (well no more stuttering that in
non-composited mode when framerates are low anyway). actual framerate cost of
compositing .. in a window = 4% framerate drop for the fastest tests. 2% for
the more "intense" tests and fore the most intense.. no drop at all.
of course if i ran this fullscreen (ie window fills the entire root window) e17
turns compositing off (unless you go disable that feature) and so its not even
standing in the way of the app and the screen it draws to, so its not very
relevant to benchmark that as it boils down to a pass-through unless you have
some really big driver bugs.

"Idle" in this case means running "top -c" on a borderless, focused, and
fully maximised terminal, with the "still" composite style, then just
watching it for a while. So in this case, the composite does not have
much to do, as anything running under the window should be irrelevant?
In case it matters, I do run the clock, tclock, and cpufreq modules, as
well as gkrellm, nothing else is updating.

Yes, openGL and texture from pixmap are both enabled. I have updated
e17 just now, added those nVidia driver options, and tested again.
The 3D virtual world viewer now runs smoothly again, and I'd have to do
some careful tests to see if there is any difference in frame rate - in
other words, no noticeable difference. Which means not enough
difference for me to worry. I'm not a frame rate whore. lol
In the "idle" test as mentioned above, it's now using 20 to 40% of one
core, so that's better. Also, using twice as much ram as it was before.
Ah, closing gkrellm drops composite E17's CPU usage to mostly 2% of one
core, with peaks of up to 25%. So it DOES matter what's running under a
non transparent window. I have the gkrellm stretched out to it's maximum
size, which takes up about half the screen real estate.
> wait a sec.. your nvidia drivers are ANCIENT... like from when

I run mostly stock current Ubuntu LTS for good reasons, and I wont
update until some time after their next Long Term Stable release is
out. And just in case people had not figured it out (surprising the
number of people that get this wrong, but that should know better) the
current Ubuntu LTS is 10.04, almost two years old, NOT 11.04.
So the graphics driver I use is the standard Ubuntu LTS one, and I
will not update it, unless Ubuntu push out an update. That's one of the
things that's very important to me to keep stock LTS. I do run some
bleeding edge stuff, like E17 for instance, but those things don't
impact on my reasons for needing to use current Ubuntu LTS.
Not sure if those nVidia driver options will stay, so I might test
without them later. They go against the "keep it stock LTS dammit"
grain. lol
I'll do some more tests, but I think I can mostly live with it now,
with the promise of better performance to come in E18. The virtual
world stuff is of major importance, so anything impacting it's
performance is a no no. I sometimes get paid to develop that stuff.
Just for further info, I run six virtual desktops, on one monitor, at
1920x1080 24 bit. I stay well away from E17's fullscreen mode, think
I've mentioned that enough over the years and why, using fully maximised
borderless windows instead. For me, "fullscreen" just means it takes
up all of the screen, NOT that I loose control and cannot switch to
other windows. I really don't care what apps that want to take over
control of my screen want to do, especially since most of those are
buggy, I want complete control of my own computer. :-P

gkrellm does not play nice with e17 for some reason. On my desktop I have it
at the bottom right corner, but if I switch compositing on, the bottom of the
gkrellm is being cropped off.

Yes. I have found out that with composite E17, gkrellm wont start up
right, but becomes fine if I restart E from the Enlightenment menu.
There are graphic glitches, and it wont update. Root window issue
maybe?
It's near the bottom of my huge TODO to write E17 modules to replace
everything I use in gkrellm.

Funny, they blamed that on the old flgrx driers in the LTS. I think I'm

correct. and if your gkrellm uses a shaped window it'll be much much mores as
for shaped windows e has to go back to pixel grabbing because it has to
implement a shape mask by modifying the alpha pixel values of an image... i
just suggest not using anything that makes shaped windows.

yes - but whatever ubuntu does, nvidia has its own bugfix/maintenance system
and ubuntu doesnt update the nvidia driver at all, so you get zero bugfixes
over your lts period with your nvidia driver. nvidia fixed several bugs in
their driver, one was a resource leak that happens after enough e restarts, or
well they mitigated it and another was a polling./spinning glxwaitgl - i
reported that and they were meant to have fixed it in a latest release.

well, up to you - but then you will have to live with some of these bugs that
frankly do at times make e totally unusable with compositing on.

lts makes no real effort to improve your options, so just assuming "everything
must always be stock" is going to put you in trouble often enough. keep things
stock that u dont need to alter, but some you do.

normal netwm requests from clients and it works for me for everything that uses
the netwm request.

thats how netwm fullscreen and e fullscreen work. keybindings stay. alt+right
mouse on window stays still. you can alt_tab and otherwise switch desktops as
normal. a lo9t of games that use sdl dont use this path and go try do their own
"bypass the wm" fullscreen and that just falls apart badly like you mention
above - users cant control the window after that, desktop switching doesnt work
etc. they grab keyboard and mouse etc. realistically for fps's u need to grab
the mouse to get relative movements, though they should have a grab/ungrab
sequence like u find in vmware and xephyr, but they dont.

The Rasterman (Carsten Haitzler) ras...@rasterman.com
I'll double check gkrellm using shaped windows.
One of the major points of me sticking with stock Ubuntu LTS is to
support people that use it. I did a survey of the people that use
software I write or maintain. Stock Ubuntu 10.04 is the base line for
what I support. So if someone is having an obscure bug, I can say
"works for me on stock Ubuntu LTS, what's different with you?".
Instead of saying "Um, go through this painful manual method of
updating your graphics drivers that also includes scary kernel module
update thingy, coz Ubuntu don't provide a nice easy GUI for non tech
users like you.".
Normal users use old crap. As a developer, I gotta live with that, but
I still get to draw the line, and I draw it at a very reasonable Long
Term Stable release of a very popular Linux distro. So for the stuff
involved in the code I write, I keep it stock and stable.
I generally keep EFL more or less up to date, but for my embedded work
I write to whatever is the latest stable EFL release, then test it
under qemu and real hardware using the latest stable EFL.
For my virtual world work, I need it to work on the drivers Ubuntu
supply, and the default options Ubuntu provide. Coz chances are, any
random user has exactly that, and getting them to change is too hard
and scary for them.

I've always bitched for years about E fullscreen not doing what I
want. This is putting windows into fullscreen mode manually, not
windows requesting it. Though I gave up bitching, so perhaps you
forgot. And perhaps it got "fixed"?

I do 3D virtual worlds, not FPS's. Mouse and keyboard grabbing don't
happen.
works for me :/ tho gkrellm's shaped window will not play nice anyway. it'll
soak up cpu nicely.

most linux 3d drivers are pretty poor, nvidia's being the golden best example
of stability and correctness - even they make some booboos. reality is they do
better as they have a much wider base of software to test them with - the same
driver core is there on windows, linux and bsd. not so with the mesa open
drivers. as such evas's gl code tends to do things by reading the gl spec - and
in many cases devs have found that gl libs just don't live up to the spec.
sungwoo recently managed to get some nice results to that effect on commercial
grade drivers where evas is bringing out the driver bugs. fglrx imho are by far
the poorest drivers of them all and i will never touch them again. the day i
found that compositing only worked with fglrcx if you named your process
"compiz" was the day i put those piles of dung into the crapper where they
belong.

did evas and ecore-evas build with evas gl engine support?
However, I always compile evas with this flags: "
--enable-word-cache --enable-pipe-render --enable-pthreads
--enable-metric-cache --enable-gles-variety-sgx", so I suppose it has. For
ecore-evas, I'm not so sure, so just to be really really sure, I will
recompile them and let you know how it goes
BTW, Is there a way to know if it has?

well configure spews out all the settings evas/ecore compile with at configure
time.
> BTW, Is there a way to know if it has?
there is a gl_x11 module for evas - another file in
PREFIX/lib/evas/modules/engines/
and it has to be named the right architecture like other moduels and be
versioned correctly (all moduels get versioned along with the evas version so
it has to match).
I am also getting the message regarding software mode OpenGL and am using
the Nvidia proprietary drivers in Ubuntu 11.10. I am able to compile E
without issue from the svn and the gl_x11 module is compiled in evas. My
logs are below. SVN version is 68512.

For EVAS, I used this flags (I enabled all the pixman stuff, but don't
think it matters)

But now I'm hitting another (and worst) bug. When I switch composite from
software render to GL, it makes enlightenment and Xserver to crash and I
got kicked to the login. And everytime I login again, it crashes again and
again until I remove ~/.e/e/config/standard/module.com.*

well it's doing something different - which now leads me to believe you do
have the gl engine there after your recompile (and didn't before). now... get a
backtrace.
http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Debugging
:)
do you perhaps have multiple efl installs in different prefixes eg /usr
and /usr/local or /usr/local and /opt/e or something? as such to get some
cmdline fun try:
export EVAS_GL_INFO=1
expedite -e gl
does that come up? if not - what does it complain about. if ti comes up... what
does it report?
expedite: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/egl/egl_dri2.so:
undefined symbol: _glapi_get_proc_address
but that lib is there:
$ ls -l /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/egl/egl_dri2.so
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28172 ago 7 2011
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/egl/egl_dri2.so
so I think I messed my libs somehow xD
--
Wido
Then, I kept looking for that egl_dri2.so file, and i happens to be
installed with libegl1-mesa package. But I'm using NV drivers (I nuke and
reinstall them as well, before I did with EFL).
So, after deleting everything, reinstalling video drivers and recompiling
all the EFL....I just like before and expedite keeps giving the same error
iirc...old man is almost always right. when he's wrong, is still right
in ways ;)

aha.. you did have old efl stuff.. i'm amazed nothing totally fell apart in a
stinking heap. try that:
export EINA_LOG_LEVELS=eina_module:4
and see.
and as i said to chris.. what does:
export ELM_GL_INFO=1
expedite -e gl
say?
lets go one step further and log module goop:
export EINA_LOG_LEVELS=eina_module:4
now what?
dh
Below is the output of the command.
c0re@Nox:~$ export EVAS_GL_INFO=1
