We are using the 1.2 API to send out email campaigns via the WordPress
admin. It's been working without issue for many months. However, we
started getting error messages yesterday for campaign titles longer
than 100 characters and subject lines longer than 150 characters. I
can't find any information about this on the MailChimp blog or in the
API documentation.

1) Is there any way to override this setting?

2) Also, is there a timeline for deprecating the 1.2 API? We would
like to know how long we have to switch over.

3) Is there anywhere to stay on top of changes like this? There is no
mention of this change in the MailChimp API Announce group either.

Thanks,

Derek

I went back through our commit logs and don't see anything we've
changed since at 2009-12-01 that would have affected whether those
errors were thrown - had you actually gone over the limits previously
and, I suppose if we let that through, just deal with cut off subjects
and titles?

Also, it's actually bytes, not characters.

No.

You have plenty of time.

The Announcement Group is exactly where we'd post something like that.
As I said, I don't see a specific change we made recently, which is
why it wouldn't be mentioned there.

Hello westcoastderek,

Are you by any chance using the Wordpress Mailchimp Framework? http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mailchimp-framework/. If that's the case, I highly discourage using it, as it has gone wrong with me on my last project. Suddenly stopped working without any code change on our part.

Try just using the PHP MCAPI instead (http://apidocs.mailchimp.com/downloads/#php). Migration should be very easy.

Regards,

Ardee

Jesse,

In answer to your question...

Yes, we've gone over the limit before. I've audited our email
campaigns in MailChimp and found that none of them have subject lines
that exceed 150 chars. However, many campaign titles exceed 100 chars
including one from as recently as 3/13/2011. The same campaign title
from 3/13/2011 is no longer accepted.

Hello Jesse,

On second thought, I have to second Derek on this one. I am also experiencing this issue as I type. Our campaign was not working since yesterday, with a Danish title of:

Få 2 par lækre strømpebukser for gravide, der sidder rigtigt og giver støtte rundt om maven – Lige nu til halv pris! (116 characters, but some letters are unicode)

I have shortened it to:

Få 2 par lækre strømpebukser for gravide, der sidder rigtigt og giver støtte

and it came in.

I am using Mailchimp API 1.3

Regards,

Ardee

Ok, I finally tracked down a bug fix that would have caused validation
to be triggered at a different point when you did not set a title and
we thus had to set it from the subject.

If you actually supply a subject or title that's too long you will
continue to receive the error.

@Ardee - that description tells me that, while this may have been
affecting you, you need to be logging error messages since they will
tell you the exact issue you are hitting.
