getting "MMERGE7 must be provided - Please enter a value" when subscribing an address on behalf of a customer

We use XML-RPC, and recently got the above message when trying to
subscribe an address using the API key of one of our customers. We
obviously have no access to their MailChimp full account, and are only
submitting FNAME, LNAME and OPTIN_IP in the merge vars.
What does the error mean?
What can we do?

If you can't login to the account, the listMergeVars() method will
return you a list of all of the merge vars and their properties.

This error means someone went into the account and either added a
required merge var or modified another one to be required. You simply
need to explain to them that since they are relying on your work, they
shouldn't be messing with the list data without consulting with you
all.

Hello Andy,

I have a hunch that your MMERGE7 merge var in your list is set to
"required". The easiest way to do it is have your customers (if you do
not have access to it) go to your List and untick the "required"
checkbox for MMERGE7.

Also, you could remove MMERGE7 altogether if you are pretty sure that
you don't need it anymore via listMergeVarDel

Either way, I think you need to communicate, since someone is doing
something that they shouldn't be doing ;)
