Is there a way to tell Mailchimp how to handle existing subscribers via the API?

I looked through the API docs but I'm not sure...

Wufoo.com, Formstack.com and other apps that tie into the Mailchimp API seem to not have any support for EXISTING subscribers.

I'm wondering if there is a way to set a default on what happens if there is an existing subscriber.

For example, if you have a standard Mailchimp signup form and the user is already subscribed, Mailchimp will throw back an error and allow that user to "Click here to update your profile". Upon clicking, Mailchimp will send out an email that allows the user to update their profile.

Can we, with the API, tell Mailchimp to automatically send out that same email (the one that allows the user to update their profile) using the API.

This way, if we're using Wufoo, Formstack or some other API integration, we can handle existing subscribers and automatically send them the update your profile email.

NOTHING happens now. The Wufoo or Formstack forms just get accepted and nothing else happens.

Thanks!

If you are coding you can play around with using the update_existing parameter since it works and, if you have the data, it would be silly to then send the user to the update profile form instead of just updating things.

If you are not coding you need to talk to whoever is for clarification on how their integration actually works and possibly suggest they look at enhancing it.
