SPEECH: THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT: LESSONS FOR THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Issue: Disabilities/Access
Chairman Kennard's Remarks for the 10th Anniversary of the Americans with
Disabilities Act, Torch Relay. "Increasingly, Americans live and work in
another world. It is not a world of bricks and mortar. It's a world of
billions and billions of digital bits that move at the speed of light over
fiber optic networks and through the airwaves - that reside in servers and
are manipulated by software. It is an exquisitely complex world that we call
the World Wide Web. And the fact is that those who have access to this world
and can navigate through it with ease have a huge advantage in our society
and in our economy....
Too many Americans with disabilities are being cut off from this virtual
world. Americans who need access to the technology that can bring them jobs
and information and education in ways undreamed of just a few years ago.
This is the real power of the New Economy. And the real challenge of the New
Economy is to make sure that this wondrous technology uplifts the lives of
every American - regardless of age or ability."

Instructors Say Online Courses Involve More Work at Same Pay
INSTRUCTORS SAY ONLINE COURSES INVOLVE MORE WORK AT SAME PAY
Issue: EdTech
Many college and university professors are taking on the new challenge of
teaching courses online, but they are finding that it takes a lot more time
and work than traditional classroom courses. The National Education
Association recently released a survey that found 53% of participants said
distance learning courses take more time to prepare for and deliver than
traditional classes. Faculty members are concerned that the extra workload
will not be accompanied by a pay raise, the survey found. The survey covered
all major forms of distance learning, including video feeds and the more
common Web- and e-mail-based courses. Eighty-three percent of the
instructors responding to the NEA survey said they contact their students at
least once a week by e-mail, and often communicate more frequently than
that.

Subject: New from The Educational Software Seminar
The Educational Software Seminar at Brown University is pleased
to announce the release of a new set of programs, created during the
Spring 2000 semester. As some of you know, the Seminar is a unique
form of university-school collaboration, in that we begin not with
particular products, but with proposals for classroom software from
local teachers (K-16). During the semester, Brown undergraduates
enrolled in the Seminar work in teams with the proposing teachers and
their students to design, create, test and implement the programs
requested, and we make many of the programs created in this way
available on the Web: http://www.cs.brown.edu/courses/cs092/.
The Spring 2000 programs now available for downloading include:
Buzz!!: A program built to teach the concepts of area and perimeter
to Ellen Lynch's Kindergarten ESL students at Vartan Gregorian Fox
Point Elementary School in Providence. A version of the program for
the PC can be downloaded from the Buzz!! project page.
Math Bug: A program designed to teach and develop students' facility
with the concepts and calculations of area and perimeter, created for
both Christine Mendonca's and Holly Polhemus' 4th grade students at
Vartan Gregorian Fox Point Elementary School. A version of the program
for the PC can be downloaded from the Math Bug project page.
A Night Out: This drug education and decision-making program was
developed for Charly Adler and Suzette Thiebault and their 9th grade
Health students, at the Met School in Providence. Versions
for both the Mac and the PC can be downloaded from the Night Out
project page.
Aspects of Perception: These Java applets were created for Leslie
Welch and the undergraduates enrolled in her Visual Perception
course, PY0027, in the Department of Psychology at Brown University.
The applets can be run directly from the Aspects of Perception
project page.
Mass Media: A tutorial and video annotation program created for
Darrell West and the students who will take his Political
Science 111 course in the Fall 2000 semester at Brown University.
The program is a guide to the structure and analysis of political
advertisements, and provides users with a editing mode for
writing annotations of their own. Versions for both the Mac and
Windows can be downloaded from the Mass Media project page.
Of course you can still download a number of popular programs from
previous years, including Pizarro's Haunted Mansion, Building Blast!,
Campaign Trail, and Rima the Rat, and can of course use our Web-based
programs as well. We are always happy to hear your comments about the
programs and the experiences you've had using them, and we encourage
you to ask your local college or university computer science department
to run a course like this in your area.
Thanks,
Roger

Popular Mac Author + Renowned "In a Nutshell" Format + 15 Years Experience
= A Definitive Mac OS Book
Sebastopol, CA--Its common-sense approach, depth of detail, and focus on
practical information has made O'Reilly & Associates' "In a Nutshell"
series one of the most popular series in computer book publishing
history. The nutshell format is perfect for the intuitive and deep
Macintosh user. If it's true that "you can learn the Mac in two hours,"
it is also true that this operating system has hidden depths that, with
the just-released "Mac OS in a Nutshell," you will be able to plumb.
"Mac OS in a Nutshell" is the reference book you'll keep by your
keyboard for those moments when you just need to get under the hood, or
answer a question quickly.
"I wanted to write the definitive Macintosh OS book and O'Reilly is the
only publisher willing to take the time to do things right. The book
took a year of my life. This has been the most rewarding, frustrating,
humbling, and exciting year of writing in my 10 years as a freelance
writer and 20 book," says Lewis. "This book is the culmination of a
year of research and over 15 years of working with Macs. The book
contains an extensive array of tips, tricks, suggestions, and tutorials
that span the breadth of the subject. It is a very unusual Nutshell
book in that it is full of pictorial examples to illustrate the unique
graphical emphasis of this operating system."
"Mac OS in a Nutshell" covers almost every command and utility,
Internet configuration and access, and clever ways to do familiar and
not-so-familiar tasks, cutting through the hype and giving practical
(and sometimes little-known) details you can use every day in the
concise and easy-to-use nutshell format.
