If you are following the movement of Hurricane Floyd in your classes, I
have a couple of suggestions.

One is the Hurricane Field Trip which leads you to a variety of
informative sites.
Go to http://www.field-guides.com/trails.htm
and click on the Hurricanes field trip. After reading through the
concepts, click on the "Let's Go" button to begin the trip.

and the 2nd is this: A friend of mine works at Intellicast which is a
company that does weather on the web. There is a fantastic satellite image
of Floyd if you go to:
http://www.intellicast.com/Tropical/World/UnitedStates/Float2HIRES/
This image is truly awesome, seeing the scale of the storm dwarfing the
land mass...talk about a picture being worth a thousand words.

CCCNET'S "SCHOOL AROUND THE WORLD" PROJECT

Meet students all over the globe and learn about their schools, their
countries and their cultures. In September and October, CCCnet's Theme of
the Month gives students and teachers the opportunity to interact with
other
students in Schools Around the World: Australia, Brunei, Germany, Mexico,
Singapore, and the United States.

Your students explore the social studies theme, Place, by sharing
information about themselves and their school and communicating with
schools in other countries. Your class may participate in communication,
activities, or both. Students in your class communicate with students in
other parts of the world to learn about other students' school experiences,
cultures, and countries. Each week a new class is featured. Your students
can read the biographical information about the class, school, and country,
and then post questions on the message board for the students in the
featured class. In addition, your students can respond to other students'
questions about your school.

The two activities are "Who We Are" and "Where We Are." "Who We Are" is
about the human characteristics of a place, while "Where We Are" is about
the physical characteristics of a place. In both cases, the "place" is your
school. Although the primary focus of the activities is social studies,
suggestions for incorporating mathematics and language arts are offered in
the Extensions sections of the lesson plans.

The School Around the World activities were developed with guidance from
the
National Council of the Social Studies standards. See the NCSS Standard
III,
People, Places, and Environments for an online summary.

CMS Interactive Releases Landmark Study of Socially Engaged Internet Users
Study Finds Vast, But Largely Untapped Potential
http://www.craveronline.com

A new study released today finds a vast, but largely untapped
potential for using new technologies to mobilize people for social
change. The announcement comes from CMS Interactive, a newly
launched division of Craver, Mathews, Smith & Company, and
pollster Mark Mellman, who examined Internet users' interests in
engaging with charities and advocacy groups online. The complete
study and results are available at the recently unveiled CMS Web
site at: <http://www.craveronline.com>, and will be presented live
online on October 27th, 1999.

The study finds that nearly 50 million Americans over 18 have
Internet access and currently either give their time and/or money
to such causes as poverty housing, human rights, civil liberties,
international relief, or the environment. Of these, however, most
have never visited the Web site of a charity, and only 3.5 million
say they have given online.

"The more sensational stories of Internet giving for Turkey and Kosovo
does not reflect the reality for most cause groups," said CMSi Director
Mark Rovner. "If you're not the International Red Cross, the Internet
revolution has yet to change your life."

But it may soon. The study identified a core group of 7.5 million
Americans - so-called "Progressive Pace-Setters" -- that has already
begun to embrace advocacy and charitable giving online, and another
7.3 million - dubbed "Thresholders" -- who appear to be on the verge of
following suit. The study also found that socially engaged Internet
users are at least as numerous, and on average 20 years younger,
than typical members acquired through such traditional means as
direct mail -- a statistic that suggests the Internet represents an
important new audience for these groups.

The study also suggested that the Internet is unlikely to replace
more traditional approaches to giving or advocacy any time soon, even
among these socially engaged cybersurfers. Concerns about privacy
and credit card security remain high, and a vast majority of participants
indicate they would never give their credit card information out to a
charity or public interest group.

Nor does the Internet appear to offer escape from the "bricks and
mortar" challenges of running a charity or advocacy group. By a 3-2
margin, engaged Internet users say they are more likely to visit the
Web site of an organization with which they were already familiar than
one they first encountered on the Internet. And a 33 percent plurality
said that a group's brand identity and reputation would be the most
important factor in deciding whether to give online.

"When you get behind the hype, you find some exciting opportunities,
but the reality is that the Internet represents valuable new tools, not an
entirely new world," added Rovner. "Learning to master those tools is
the next big challenge."

Visit CMS online at http://www.craveronline.com> to sign up for the
FREE live presentation of the landmark study on October 27th, 1999,
and to access full study results, tools and resources for up-to-the minute
information, background, and links for cause organization leaders and
doers.

Established in 1975, Craver, Mathews, Smith & Company (CMS) is the
oldest and largest provider of communications, direct marketing, and
fundraising services to many of America's foremost advocacy groups
and charities. Current CMS partner-clients include: American Civil
Liberties Union, Amnesty International-USA, the Christopher Reeve
Paralysis Foundation, Christian Children's Fund, Habitat for Humanity
International, Handgun Control, Inc., the Humane Society of the US,
Heifer Project International, and The Wilderness Society.
