Date: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 13:00:45 -0800
To: network...@etc.bc.ca
From: Nuggets Editor <nug...@etc.bc.ca>
Subject: Subtracting Negative Web Numbers -- Network Nuggets

*** [[[ SUBTRACTING NEGATIVE WEB NUMBERS ]]] ***

I was editing a teacher-training manual for Math teachers
in southern Africa the other day, and its author mentioned
the difficulty that many students have when subtracting
negative numbers. "Hmmm", thought I. "There must be
some negative numbers on the Web that will help those
students learn, by making the differences between negative
numbers more realistic." So here is a suggestion: worldwide
current temperatures from the U.S. National Weather
Service at http://weather.noaa.gov/weather/ccworld.html .

A teacher could identify some sites that are almost
guaranteed to post negative temperatures. "Antarctic"
is a safe bet, and so is any town in Canada whose address
includes "N.W.T." or "Nunavut". If you do this activity
in the middle of the northern hemisphere winter, then major
northern cities like St. Petersburg and Ottawa will also
serve. Be sure to specify Celsius temperatures to your
students (they are more often negative). Have some students
write those current temperatures on the board.

Then place questions like these on your worksheet:

"Which is colder today, and by how many degrees Celsius:
-- Iqaluit in the Canadian Arctic, or the Antarctic?
-- Ottawa or Moscow? (sometimes this can surprise you!)

"How many degrees warmer is Honolulu, Hawaii than Helsinki
Finland right now?"

As desired with Web-based activities, you can use the same
worksheet from year to year, yet your students are confronted
with an up-to-the-minute activity.

If you don't have a classroom computer to do that live-on-screen activity,
print the U.S. Naval Observatory's "World Time Zone Map"
from http://aa.usno.navy.mil/AA/faq/docs/world_tzones.html .

Questions like "How many hours difference between ____ and
____," for certain pairs of European and Asian countries,
force users of this map to subtract negative numbers,
since the map provides no other means to compute the answer.

New Movies this Holiday Season
By Robin Nobles

What new movies are out this holiday season? What are they rated?
Why? Where can you learn more?

As expensive as it is to go to the movies these days, it pays to
spend a little time researching a movie before plopping down your
hard-earned bucks. Also, if you're a parent, you'll want to know what
a movie is rated and why, before you drop your child off at the
theater.

One of the best places to begin our tour is BoxOffice Online. The
site posts reviews of each movie and awards up to 5 stars, depending
on how good they think the movie is. You'll be able to learn the
rating for the movie and the reasons for that rating as well as who
is starring in it.
http://www.boxoffice.com

BoxOffice Online also gives you a run down on the movies for this
holiday season.
http://www.boxoffice.com/issues/nov00/holiday_text.html

At Yahoo! Movies, you'll learn the Top Box Office movies, which
movies opened this week, and which movies are coming soon. You can
also learn which movies are coming out on video or DVD. Where
professional reviewers review the movies at BoxOffice, users review
the movies at Yahoo! Movies, and there can be quite a discrepancy.
For example, BoxOffice rated 102 Dalmatians with a 1, whereas the
users at Yahoo! rated it a 5.
http://movies.yahoo.com

Often, you can visit the official Web sites of movies to see pictures
and learn background information about those movies. Here are a few
sites:

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas, rated 2 =AB stars by
BoxOffice and 3 =AB user stars by Yahoo!; starring Jim Carey; rated PG
for crude humor.
http://www.grinched.com/

102 Dalmatians, rated 1 star by BoxOffice and 5 user stars by Yahoo!;
starring Glenn Close; rated G.
http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/102dalmatians

Rugrats in Paris, rated 3 =AB stars by BoxOffice and Yahoo!; animated;
rated G.
http://www.nick.com/all_nick/movies/rugrats_paris/index.jhtml

Unbreakable, rated 4 stars by BoxOffice and 3 user stars by Yahoo;
starring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson; rated PG-13 for mature
themes, some violent content, and sexual reference.
http://studio.go.com/movies/unbreakable/intro.html

The 6th Day, rated 1 =AB stars at BoxOffice and 3 =AB user stars at
Yahoo!; starring Arnold Schwarzenegger; rated PG-13 for strong action
violence, brief strong language, and some sensuality.

For more information on current and upcoming movies, visit
Hollywood.com. The Holiday Movie Guide even offers a listing of the
upcoming movies by date. You can also view a full list of movies
where you can read a synopsis of each movie, learn the ratings and
release date, or visit the "trailer" for an insider's look at the
movie.

Subject: RESOUR> 72 websites about Chanukah

Chanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is observed for
eight days, beginning on the evening of the 25th day of
the Hebrew month of Kislev. This year Chanukah starts
at sundown, Thursday, December 21st, 2000 and lasts for
eight days thru Friday, December 29th, 2000.
Chanukah is a wonderful holiday of renewed dedication,
faith, hope and spiritual light. It's a holiday that says:
"Never lose hope."

Chanukah commemorates the victory of a small band
of Maccabees over the pagan Syrian-Greeks who ruled
over Israel.

Below are 72 websites about Chanukah, ranging from laws
and customs to games and recipes. For your convenience,
the sites are also hyper-linked online at:
