Next Friday, Dec 8, marks the 20th anniversary of John Lennon's death. As
has been my practice, I go
to Central Park and lay a rose enwrapped in a scroll of names of those who
would like to honor John
Lennon on the Imagine Star in Strawberry Fields, opposite the Dakota, his
place of residence.

If you would like to have your name added to that scroll of names, please
email me privately and I
will ad your name. Please pass this on to other lists and friends. I will
be leaving for Strawberry
Fields about 6pm EST Dec 8.

Project Information
-------------------
Project Author: C Erickson <cer...@email.kyrene.k12.az.us>

Project Title: 2000 Noises

Project Begin & End Dates: 9/05/00 to 3/30/01

Project Summary:
Noise is unwanted acoustical stimulus. Noise pollution is exposure to
elevated levels of noise. 2000 Noises is a global research project
designed to unite middle school students in hands on noise pollution
research and to educate global culture communities to harmful effects of
noise pollution.
-------------------

Project Details
-------------------
Project Level: Basic

Curriculum Area: Community Interest, Health and Physical Education, History
and Social Studies, Language, Mathematics, Science, Technology

Technologies Used: CU-SeeMe or Other Video Conferencing, Email, Web Based
Discussion Forum

Full Project Description:
Global classrooms will begin the study of noise and noise pollution by
first defining noise and noise pollution in their culture community. After
the definitions have been established, the students will begin the field
study of collecting audio data. Students will collect four ten-minute
samples of sounds and noises, one from each of the following four zoned
districts in their community: hospital or health care district, residental
district, commercial district, and industrial district. Students will
analyze the audio data and classify the sounds and noises as 1)nature
produced (including spoken languages)or 2) man-made/technology.
Throughout their research, students will post their findings to a web based
discussion forum and post to a web page links to recorded audio and visual
data.
After the noise samples has been classified, students will measure the
sound levels of the audio data to establish the level of noise pollution in
their own culture community. The students will research existing noise
pollution legislation and/or ordinances in their communties, as well as,
their culture's acceptable level of noise. Lastly, students will
suggest/write possible solutions and/or action
plans to solve the problem of noise pollution at their community level and
a global level.

Objectives:
Students will analyze locations, regions, and spatial connections
recognizing the natural and cultural processes that impact the way in which
people and societies live and interact with each other and their environment.
Student will utilize sources and references for information writing.
Students will demonstrate understanding and application of various
curricular content through the intergration of technology into teaching and
learning activities.

The recent questions on plagiarism reminded me to share a resource I just
discovered. FindSame.com http://findsame.com/ is a full text search
engine that will place the text in question right next to other Web text
it matches.

Hope this is helpful!

The November/December issue of From Now On:
The Educational Technology Journal is now available
for free online at http://fno.org

Two articles this month focus on planning issues.

1. First Things First: Networking for Student Learning
by Jamie McKenzie

This article proposes that we put literacy and learning
at the fore front when planning the installation of networks
instead of putting the cart before the horse.

2. Pacing Change
by Jamie McKenzie

Previously published in the Connected Classroom newsletter,
this article explores the issue of timing and pacing the change
process to win the enthusiastic and skillful support of most
staff members.

Enjoy!

To: LM_...@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU

MultiEducator Inc. announced the launch of a new history Web site on the
Internet, HistoryCentral.com (http://www.historycentral.com).
Drawing on materials from the 21 History CD-ROMs developed by MultiEducator
over the last decade, HistoryCentral.com presents a timeline of major world
history events beginning in 10,000 BC and ending with 1999. Links are
provided to related Web sites and to additional information.

Also offered is a complete history of U.S. Presidential elections, offering
state-by-state tallies, and graphs of the electoral and popular vote. The
section is currently tracking the 2000 elections with updated polls and
pertinent candidate in-formation. This election component also links to a
biography section covering the lives of the American presidents and first
ladies.

Another feature of the site is NationbyNation.com, - historical, economic,
demographic, and geographic information on all countries of the world.
