CoSN Announces the 2nd Annual Outstanding Achievement Awards
CoSN is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Outstanding Achievement Awards
program to formally recognize outstanding achievement by leaders in the
area of school networking. Applications will be accepted until January 5, 2001

At the 2001 K-12 School Networking Conference in Washington DC, February

utilization of information technologies in the classroom.

"Girl Power is the national public education campaign sponsored by
the U.S. Department of the Health and Human Services to help
encourage and motivate 9- to 14- year-old girls to make the most of
their lives. Girls at 8 or 9 typically have very strong attitudes
about their health, so Girl Power! seeks to reinforce and sustain
these positive values among girls ages 9-14 by targeting health
messages to the unique needs, interests, and challenges of girls."

I don't know if this is hilarious, disturbing, or both, but here it is
nonetheless... -ac

Inside the Wired Homes of the Rich

Forget your stock portfolio, your mansion and the Porsche. There's a new
status symbol for Silicon Valley's rich and nerdy. The size of your Head
End. That's right, your Head End -- the control room housing those
floor-to-ceiling banks of servers, routers, computers and other requisite
gadgets for the ultimate wired home. The bigger your Head End, the more
whiz-bang your villa. And if you're a high-tech mogul who craves living on
the bleeding edge, you want the Mother of All Head Ends. "Once your friends
come over and see your Head End, then other Head Ends tend to populate,"
says Paul Wilkinson, CEO of Advanced Automation Engineering, a
Campbell-based home networking installation company that caters to
dot-commers and other varieties of silicon millionaires. He goes on to say
that with most Head Ends, "The racks of equipment look like an office
building's data system." As Silicon Valley's wealth has skyrocketed, so has
the business of wiring up gazillionaires' homes. Wilkinson's most outrageous
and costly job? "I have one pushing $5 to $6 million," says the master
systems designer and installer, adding that the design drawings for the home
theater system alone cost well over $50,000.

WHO Boosts Health Information Via Internet

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Open Society Institute (OSI), a
part of the Soros Foundation network, have teamed with leading information
providers ISI and SilverPlatter, to provide access to high quality
scientific information, via the Internet, to research centres in countries
in Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. A WHO statement said Tuesday
that other public and private partners are involved in the project, while
discussions are also under way with Elsevier Science to join the initiative.
It said the pilot project is part of a wider UN programme called "Health
InterNetwork," which aims to improve global public
health by facilitating the flow of health information worldwide, using
Internet technologies.
