Hi folks,

I'm hoping that given the recent focus on filtering, and the international
reach of WWWEDU and CoSN, that you'll find the following to be of interest.

SAFE SURFING 2001- World's First International Convention on Online Safety

I'm writing to invite you to join me in Singapore for Safe Surfing 2001 from
22-24 February 2001. Safe Surfing 2001 is the world's first international
convention on online safety and is organised by the Parents Advisory Group for
the Internet (PAGi) and the National Internet Advisory Committee (NIAC).

The main theme of Safe Surfing 2001 is - from community groups, regulators to
industry, ensuring child safety on the Internet is everyone's concern.
I've been invited to share my experiences on the topic, Internet Responsibility
@Schools. Other topics being discussed are 'Trends in Online Safety',
'Towards a Culture of Responsibility', 'Content that Sells' and 'Raising
Kids in an
Online World'.

Safe Surfing 2001 is targeted at online service providers, content creators,
regulators, educationists and advocates promoting child safety on the Internet.
Delegates who are concerned about the increasing number of children using the
Internet for education, communicaiton and entertainment, can look forward to
fruitful discussions on online safety practices around the world. Another
highlight of the event is an exhibition featuring an exclusive display of
advanced services and applications to promote online safety.

Study To Measure Consumer Online Purchasing Attitudes for the 2000 Holiday
Season

San Francisco, CA - December 7, 2000 /Xpress Press/ - King, Brown &
Partners (KB&P), a market research, strategy, and planning firm, announced
today a forthcoming Internet research study that will measure consumer
online purchasing attitudes and behavior during the 2000 holiday shopping
season.

The study, drawn from an online panel of 130,000 participants, will explore
consumer's perspectives on aspects of online retailing that relate to
online purchasing decisions. KB&P's research will focus on five areas:

- Understand anticipated and actual consumer online shopping behavior for
the 2000 holiday season.

- Assess whether consumers who bought online previously intend to buy again
and whether they will purchase from the same or different sites.

- Measure consumer attitudes about purchasing from "pure play" e-tailers,
vs. those with physical store locations ("clicks and bricks").

- Assess how print catalogs impact online shopping behavior.

- Understand the importance of brand familiarity in online purchase
decision making.

The study will take part in two phases: a pre-Christmas phase will study
anticipated consumer online shopping this holiday season, with findings
announced December 14; a post-holiday phase studying actual online shopping
behavior, with findings announced on January 18th, 2001.

"This will likely be a 'make or break' holiday season for e-tailers," says
Hal King of KB&P. "Because online retailers need to understand consumer
attitudes regarding online shopping, our study will explore consumer
perspectives on various e-commerce models and measure consumer attitudes
that drive current online purchasing behaviors."

Journalists can obtain a full study description, a list of topics to be
covered in the questionnaire, and subscribe to the KB&P press mailing list
to receive the completed study. Visit the KB&P online Press Room at

How to Get A Sony PlayStation2 (PS2) By Christmas - Without Getting Scammed

Boone, NC - Dec. 7, 2000/Xpress Press/ - With Christmas fast approaching
and the huge PS2 shortages escalating, more and more people fear that
getting a PS2 before the holidays is becoming impossible. Even consumers
willing to pay a premium don't know how much of a surcharge is
"reasonable," or how to avoid getting scammed.

"The three biggest issues that frustrated PS2 hunters face are price,
availability, and whether stores that claim to have PS2's in stock at a
reasonable price are, in fact, scams," said Dr. Audri G. Lanford, Co-Editor
of Internet ScamBusters and CEO of WZ.com Inc., a company featuring a new
PlayStation2 "Realm" that finds the very best legitimate Internet sites and
resources on the PS2 (at http://wz.com/games/PlayStation2.html ). This
helps consumers avoid misinformation about PS2's, and provides answers to
important questions.

For example...

* How much should a person pay for this year's hottest gaming console, the
PS2, if they want to receive it before Christmas: $300? $500? $650? $725?
$1000? $5000???

* What are the best strategies for getting a PS2 by Christmas - without
paying a premium?

* What are the best places on the Net to find up to the minute info on
availability, shipping dates, and the best deals on PS2 systems and games?

* Which Internet companies are falsely advertising that they have PS2's in
stock (and which of these are outright scams)?

The Better Business Bureaus in the US and Canada issued their first scam
warning on Dec. 1, 2000, stating that a few Internet companies are falsely
advertising they have PS2's available.

Audri Lanford is frequently interviewed on radio, in newspapers, magazines,
trade magazines and on the Web, and has been featured in many of the top
publications. Available for interviews, Audri welcomes questions from
listeners and readers alike.

Here's a cute joke you can share with your students:
------------------------------------------------------------

There once was a czar in Russia whose name was Rudolph the Great. He was
standing in his house one day with his wife. He looked out the window and
saw something happening. He said to his wife, "Look honey. Its raining."

She, being the obstinate type, responded, "I don't think so, dear. It looks
like snow to me." But Rudolph knew better. So he said to his wife, "Let's
step outside and we'll find out." Lo and behold, they stepped outside and
discovered it was, in fact, rain.

Rudolph turned to his wife and replied boastfully, "Rudolph the Red knows
rain, dear!"

SOLAR and SPACE WEATHER (December 7, 2000)

3-Day Solar Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be mostly low
through Saturday. A chance of isolated moderate solar flare activity
exists for regions of sunspots, called 9254 and 9246.

3-Day Aurora Forecast: Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet to
unsettled through Friday. Saturday may increase to active levels with
isolated minor storming, due to a coronal hole that's in a position to
send higher spurts of solar wind Earthward.

Solar Data: Wednesday's sunspot number was 99. Thursday morning's solar
wind speed was 439 kilometers per second (982,000 mph), and the solar
wind density was 10.8 protons per cubic centimeter. (Speed and density
values are snapshots in time and change during the day.)
